Can you use Future Usage Year Points + NOT bank Remaining Current Usage Year Points ?

Do you have to bank points left from your current year, in order to make a reservation for a future year's reservation time frame.

I ask, because I still may want to take a current usage year additional trip as well, I just don't have one in mind yet, but I still have current usage year points left that are still bankable months from now.

I definitely have a plan for my future year's points and time frame already, and that reservation 11 month window can be made soon and it occurs before my next banking deadline for the current usage year.

If I can hold onto the current usage year's remaining points until the 100 percent banking deadline, I believe I will have more options if that is allowed? What do I lose if alternately I bank my remaining current years usage points immediately, and then decide to go for an additional trip in my current usage year say sometime in a few months from now?

Summary:

I know I want a 11 month window reservation soon for my future 2011 usage year point's time frame.

I don't know if I want to give up my left over current year's points yet, as I still have many months left until my banking deadline for the current year.
I may still decide to add a vacation for my current point's usage year as well.

I think I confused myself and everyone else reading this !

Thanks, Phil

You can book a trip for the next use year without banking current use year points. But realize that if you do decide to bank them at a later date they willnot automatically be used for the reservation you have already booked. The points used are allocated at the time of reservation.

Another option would be to bank your points, then if you decide to travel before the endo of the use year, you could borrow from next year.

Agree with Chuck. We banked ours as we were undecided.. then used 2011 instead for a trip in Nov.

MS can reallocate points among reservations, can't they?

Yes, they can, but it is not automatic. And there is nothing that guarantees our ability to do so, that favor by MS could be discontinued at any time if it is deemed to cause problems in the reservation system.

Just as years ago I was allowed to "drop" a portion of a lockoff without making a new reservation. That is no longer the case.

Thanks for your replies.

A followup question.

If I bank my 2010 points, make a reservation in the 2011 usage year, and then later decide to make a reservation within my 2010 usage year time frame, will they borrow my points from the 2011 year or the 2012 year?

Just not sure what it means that they you can borrow points from your future year, as right now I have a current 2010 year, 2011 future year, and a 2012 future future year. If I bank points now into my 2011 future year, does it violate something to borrow from that same future year, but I am still doing a 2010 current usage year booking?

Is the ban against borrowing points from a year you banked into, or only if it is not a future year yet?

I just confused myself again, and probably you too !

Thanks

You can bank 2010 to the 2011 use year, and borrow from the 2011 use year for travel in the 2010 use year. You can not borrow from the 2012 use year for travel in the 2010 use year. You can only borrow 2012 use year points for travel dates in the 2011 use year.

In other words, lets look at 4 use years 1,2,3,4 with 1 being the current 2010 use year.

You can bank year one to year two. You can bank year 2 to year 3, after the start date for year 2. You can borrow year 3 for use in year 2, if needed, at the start of the year 2 11 month booking window. You could bank year 3 to year 4 after the year 3 start date. You could borrow year 4 to year 3, if needed, when the year 3 11 month booking window opens.

In any current use year, you have up to 3 use years to work with, past, present and future.

Lord, it sounds like a plot line out of Bewitched or I Dream of Jeannie.

Thanks Chuck !

Well Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie were both MAGICAL sitcom's.
The writers could always find an easy way to explain anything away.

But those plots were not as confusing to me as my favorite TV program of all time, LOST ! I still seek answers on that one.
