Can you use a Verizon Droid with AT&T?

My husband had his Iphone stolen this past weekend while working so we are kind of in an emgergency mode. My friend is willing to give us her old Droid until we can buy another Iphone so he has something to use (we don't have a home phone). If I take it to AT&T, can/will they unlock it so it can be used with their system?
