Without committing yourself to DVC for a long time, can you rent a place for 7 - 10 days to see if it is for you? Can you split it up between 2 places to see which ones you might like better?

Of course! And you can either pay cash or rent an owner's points (much cheaper - see Rent/Trade board.) And yes, you can move from resort to resort - last year I took a week-long solo trip and stayed at 3 DVC resorts for 2 or 3 days, for that exact reason! Loved them all, and ended up buying while there and also buying a resale when I got home. It's a great way to put a toe in the DVC waters...

PS - Papa Deuce, I am headed to Costco now. Any lunch recommendations? LOL!

Yes, you can rent from a member (see the Rent/Trade Boards on this site). Or you can rent rooms from Disney if they have rooms available for your dates of travel. If you rent from a member, point values are cheaper on Sun-Thurs nights, and since members charge by the point, those nights will be your best value. Weekend points per night are usually around double the weeknight points. HTH!

Thanks... and I recommend the Caesar Salad. ;)

The time of year you travel also makes a huge difference in the amount of points you would need to rent. The biggest bang for the buck is going to be January, September, October, November (excluding Thanksgiving weekend), and the first two weeks of December. As mentioned previously, you might want to stay at one DVC resort the first 1/2 of the week, stay at a non-DVC resort Fri/Sat Night, and then move to another DVC resort the second 1/2 of the week. Of course, this might be more trouble than it's worth to keep packing/unpacking. Only you know what's best for your family. Be warned though -- there's no turning back! :teeth:
