I have been dealing with some shin issues for a few weeks now and have done zero training.

I will be able to start this weekend can I train for a full in 12 weeks, any ideas. I am a walker not sure if that changes anything.

It is possible to train to run or walk a marathon in 12 weeks; however, I would urge caution and not recommend it to many folks. There are a few assumptions behind the affirmative statement such as; you are starting from an excellent base, you are not injured and you are an experienced marathoner. I would tend to urge even more caution for a person who is coming off injury or has little base to start from.

Saying this, I know human will is not one to be taken lightly and if one is committed mentally to the game, then one can overcome huge obstacles.

If you are looking for a plan, PM me. It will take a little thought and some back and forth to get something in place. Just understand marathon day is not going to be pretty and the risk for injury is high.

Well, you *could*, but it doesn't mean you *should*. There's so much risk for injury, especially moving from being a walker. What about doing a half instead in 12 weeks?

Have you been run/walking 25+ miles/week for at least 3 months? If not, I would not recommend it. You are far more likely to get injured again than finish.

Whatever you decide, good luck. :goodvibes

Thanks all.

I would love to change to the half but I have already signed up for the Marathon in January.

Shame its not like the old days at Disney... One could simply bail at mile 13 and get a donald.

Oh really? That would have helped me a lot :)

I have only been doing the Disney races since 2007 and I am pretty sure it was Sat and Sun then.

I asked RD about deferring to next year which I can do but it only goes towards the marathon. I am doing Goofy in 2015 for the anniversary. My first Goofy was 2010.

So I'm in the exact same predicament with starting training for the full this weekend.

I'm assuming since the half is sold out, you can't "defer/drop" down?

Like others have said, your base really comes into play here. 12 weeks is about the minimum I would recommend for anyone contemplating a full marathon. Since you're goal is only to finish, though, I think it's possible (barring injury) to build your weekly mileage (30+) and long run (16+) in that time span.

My brother did that for this past Goofy challenge. He didn't begin training for the Goofy until around Nov. His reasons were not injury just time restraints which was a poor excuse.

At anyrate, he was fine for the half...walked it. The full was a different story. He was mentally out of it only a few miles into it. He walked it in many hours. He crossed the finish line in pain, both physical and mental...he had knee problems and only wrapped his knee in an ace bandage. He didn't drink enough water because his head was down the whole way. Later that day he didn't want to go to the MK with us and instead went to bed (ok I got that part). Overall he said he was so miserable

Most of his misery came from his own self not preparing. First, I told him to come to these boards for advise and he didn't because he had done two marathons before (though not a Goofy). He has a bum knee (as I do) yet forgot to bring and then buy a knee band...so he bought an ace bandage...wrapped it too tight and cut blood supply.
Mostly though was mental. He had decided early on that he wasn't going to enjoy the race and he didn't.

I must reread your op but how long has it been since you did anything? I would say it depend on that...how long you have been out of commission.

Take it easy, take it slow. Don't try to do too much too soon to catch up that will make it worse (been there done that).

I think you will do fine if you walk it and accept the fact that you could be swept...but you tried. Don't over do it , its not worth it.

As for my brother, he is doing the same training he did last year...which is pissing me off.

Well, they say that stupidity should be painful. In this case, it will be. ::yes::

It is very annoying. He said this past year he was going to train. He didn't want to go through what he did this year. He wants to enjoy it. He wants to go to the parks after the full with his kids, his plan this year but he couldn't.

So I email him and ask him how many miles he has been doing and he responds by telling me how many cookies he ate.

I told him he is going to repeat this year again. He said he will train soon when he has time.

Good luck to him.
