Can I substitute a side salad or anything else for the dessert if we are on the Quick Service Dining Plan? Or any of the dining plans really?

No on the QS dining plan they really stick to what you get is what you get. You might be able to get a fruit cup as dessert but in my experience they are pretty strict. As for regular dining plan they are al little more relaxed depending on server. We've been able to get a cheeese plate instead on a dessert but totally up to different resteraunts.

A few years ago, we were allowed to have a bottle of water in place of the CS dessert.

No idea if it would still be allowable now!

I skip the dessert with the CS meals as well. I am always offered an alternative. Usually I get bottled water to go. One time I think I got chocolate milk. One time I told the server at WGP Express that I didn't want dessert. I had already told them I wanted a bowl of soup with my meal and would pay OOP for it. When I told her I didn't want dessert she said she could substitute the soup for my dessert. :goodvibes Oh, this was just last month.

Ask the cashier. I haven't seen a CS dessert worth eating, except the creme brulee at WP Express! Yumm! Anyway, I have been allowed to get a side salad, an iced coffee, a bottled water, etc. I find it helpful to ask specifically, as if it's quite normal to do so, "May I have the blank for dessert?"

This is far more flexible on the quick service plan than the regular dining plan. On that plan you may not substitute your dessert for an appetizer under any circumstances. You can ask for any alternative dessert that may be available though.

We've had pretty good luck in the past substituting almost any side the CS location carries as long as it is not a protein. For instance I could get fruit but not hummus, salad but not hard boiled egg, chips but not tepenade (even though that's not protein; it just I guess seems more "meal-like" I guess). I've mostly done this at resort CS locations as in park I generally would prefer a bottled drink to take with me. Just ask at the individual location and they'll tell you what they permit. As dandave said, it does help to ask about specific items rather than a general what can I get.

I had no problem getting grapes or yogurt or even water for my dessert. I just ask and they tell you yes or no. Most of the time I would grab grapes because DS likes them. Also I grabbed Nescrappe and a soda :thumbsup2

Also I grabbed Nescrappe :thumbsup2

Is there a use for this stuff I'm unaware of? Perhaps for cleaning bathroom fixtures or degreasing an old engine block?

Just curious. I've always seen it at the drink counters but I never have seen what people do with it after they order it.

It was still allowed at the end of last year. We often do this, and have also had a bottle of juice as a dessert. Sunshine Seasons allowed a plain green side salad from the grab and go a couple of years back. A lot of it depends on the CM who serves you but generally speaking, we have never had a problem subbing water for dessert at CS.

Yes, this is my one big frustration with the regular dining plan. I'm not a desert guy, and wish I could substitute an appetizer instead at a similar price at a table service meal. Not allowed.:sad1:

"apple slices to go please". Don't know why but we love those darn apples, so munchable!!!!

We have not been turned down anywhere to sub the dessert for a bottle of water. I am not a dessert person and can only take so many apples before I feel like a horse, so it's water for me to go at every CS meal.
