I was at the employment office today, minding my own business, waiting for my appointment. I guess there was a workshop there or something, because there were a lot of people at the table next to me. One of them was talking about natural disasters and she said, "We have the cold and snow, Florida has hurricanes and tornadoes, California has earthquakes, the midwest has tornadoes and Hawaii has volcanoes. You're not safe anywhere in the U.S., except for maybe Mexico." :confused3

I hope she's not applying for a job as a geography teacher!

That's hysterical--maybe she meant NEW Mexico which is often confused as not being a part of the U.S.!

I use to work in a call center. Ppl would call and ask for our sales flier and since it was sent out media mail I had to ask if they were calling from the US. I had atleast 5 different customers state, "Nope, callin' from Kentucky"

Hopefully she meant New Mexico.

Plenty of earthquakes & hurricanes in Mexico.

Why is this? I used to live in New Mexico. Once I was making reservations for my trip to Disney and the CM kept saying, OK, I'm sending the confirmation to Mexico. I kept saying, no NEW MEXICO, she insisted that New Mexico was not a real place. I asked her what she thought the 50th United State was. You know what she said? Canada

I once spoke to a lady who wanted to go to Europe and visit Japan.

:rotfl: :rotfl: Bunch of geography whizzes, eh?

When I lived in NM, I worked at a bank that took over a portfolio of outside loans so we had people freaking out all over the U.S. I got one call where a woman wanted to know if she now had to pay her loan in pesos--umm...no, dollars are accepted in NEW Mexico. Another woman who was irate told me, "Well, I don't know how you do things in YOUR country but in the United States we..." You freak, New Mexico is in the United States. Big ole place between Texas and Arizona.

Would you believe it happens in the post office, too? I had a friend growing up who lived in a small township just outside of our city, called East China Township. You wouldn't believe the problems they had with mail - in both directions - requesting international postage!! It was a nightmare for them.

Considering a recent poll indicated that 42% of Mexican citizens would emigrate to the USA if they could, perhaps we should annex Mexico and get them to pay taxes! :rotfl:

How about tourists in the Hawaii who say that they are going back to the "United States" or wonder about what currency they should use?

When I was moving to Albuquerque several years back (I've since returned to Chicago) one of my friends looked me in the eye and said "I didn't know you spoke spainish." I thought she was joking. Unfortunately, she wasn't.

A couple of years ago my wife and I were at the final game of the Little League Softball World Series. The match-up featured Maryland and Puerto Rico. We just came to watch the game and weren't rooting for anybody. That was the case until the parents from Maryland started chanting "U-S-A, U-S-A" My wife and I just looked at each other. We instantly decided to cheer for Puerto Rico from that point forward! We opted not to side with the geo-politically clue-less.
