Can you set a limit on the KTTW cards?

I'm wondering if I can set a limit on my children's Key To The World cards--I don't want them to literally be keys to the world (if you get my meaning)!! I know that no one else's kids would run up a mean charge bill, it's just mine! But seriously, my kids have been saving their money and building up their "cruise fund". So is it possible to set a limit on each of their cards? And can they have differing limits? Will this effect MY spending on my card? Crazy questions, I know, but if anyone knows the answers, it someone on this board--y'all are great!!

Sorry, but no would be the answer about putting a limit amount on the KTTW card. A friend of mine was on a cruise last year and "thought" her son was going to be responsible with his KTTW card. It's a good thing she checked her onboard account a few days into the cruise because her son had run up a tiddy $$ amount in the arcade. Needless to say, she had a whole punched in his KTTW card and that ended his onboard charging account.

This is a post from a week or so ago :

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=776372

It talks about setting up KTTW cards on different credit card accounts. I had posted in it about applying money to my kids accounts (i.e. birthday money, Disney Dollars, etc) that they have earned over the next year. If you can charge to 4 different credit card accounts, I don't know why you couldn't set your kids cards up to pull out of their own pool of money.

I still need to call DCL about this. I'll let you know what I find out. :flower:

We put one credit card for both my and my DH KTTW cards. I had the charging privleges removed on my kids.

Thought Verandah Man was talking about my daughter for a second there.... :sad2:
She did the same thing with her card...We had her card "punched/deactivated" and the next day she swiped the babys card (our infant nephew) and started charging to it also (until we CAUGHT her).... So everyone realize that ALL cards will be activated for charges of up to $200 a day....

If you think your kids may be irresponsible...don't take the risk unless you have the money to cover it...You can always give the kids cash for the arcade, souvenirs, and soda is free...

It's a shame they can't find a way to do this. It would be a great lesson in responsibility. Give them a set amount and when it's gone, too bad. DS will be 13 when we go in August and I would like to let him be able to buy a few things himself. He wants charging privileges so he can order smoothies and such. But I know he is not very responsible with keeping track of where is card is and I'm really afraid of him losing it.

I remember you tell us this story in the past ... and I am amazed at the "ingenuity" of your DD!!! I've used excerpts of your story in the past when this topic has come up. If I was in your shoes I would have been ANGRY and then laid down the law with DD, then I would have had to go off by myself and have a great LAUGH because of her ingenuity!! Here in Oregon the kids have to take "standardized" tests and in math you have to solve the problem and then verify it. Your DD will have no problems with coming up with multiple solutions to problems.

I don't envy your future "problems" with her. She'll be one that has multiple "escape routes" out of the house without waking you up. Good Luck!!

I had asked this of DCL prior and just wanted to verify. You can set a limit on the kids KTTW card or cut it off immediately. Just relaying what I was told as I am sailing in May and wanted to know for sure for my spend crazy young man!
Have a great day!

The problem is that even if you put cash on a KTTW, if you charge more DCL lets you, and then you get a note (or call) in your stateroom telling you that you need to put more cash on your card.

It's not like you can put $200 cash on the card and say "when it's gone, don't allow any more charges." My guess is that it would be a programming nightmare to be able to do that for 2,000+ guests.

My DD(15) will have a tidy sum of money she will have saved by the Aug repo cruise (some for excursions, some for souvenirs). When we first get on the ship we will have her put her cash on her KTTW card at Guest Services. And she will have to go to Guest Services every other day to request a copy of her card statement to date. When she exhausts her cash, we'll have her card hole-punched at that time and her charging privileges will cease. But if she exceeds her cash limit before the card is hole-punched, we'll be liable for the overages.

FYI, not sure if you meant in your post that you can give them cash to use in the Aracdes and shops or you meant that they can use the cash toward paying off their charges....because the ship is cashless and no cash is accepted in the shops or arcade. Everything must be charged to the KTTW card and then they could payoff that account with cash.

Just wanted other to know how it worked.

Is this something that is new? Some of the other posts say that you cannot set a limit. Limits would be GREAT for the kids (and probably some adults too). I don't think my kids would intentionally spend like wild, but I can see them lose track of their spending in the arcade. The bigger concern for me would be the possibility of loss and someone else spending like wild against my credit card. Both kids are saving like mad for this trip (39 days until we set sail!!!), but I don't want them to learn about the parent credit union just yet. I think they would hate to keep paying for the trip all summer.

Not everything must be KTTW.... I've used other cards, etc to pay for things in the gift shops and in shutters because the CC on my KTTW was close to its limit on our last TWO cruises in 2004. I've used my Visa check card and other credit card and I could almost sware I've used cash too.

Not sure about the arcade though...I just know that I got burned because my daughter was being over generous and bought over $100 worth of arcade cards in 2 days. I thought the arcade machine might take cash but maybe if they don't, as a parent you would have to go to the arcade and purchase an arcade card with your KTTW each time your DS/DD wants one.

As for theft or loss of KTTW card......unless someone knows your room number which is not printed on the card.....I think they do not let them charge, in fact they asked for room number EVERY time I bought a drink or used it in a store....the only place i can think of where you may get burned is at the arcade card machine.....

You might be able to pay cash in Shutters on debarkation day, but no other time on the ship or on Castaway Cay (other than the post office) can you pay cash.

I personally haven't tried with a credit card, but it would surprise me that they'd take anything other than the KTTW card.
