As for DAS, once the group is linked to the DAS guest, it doesn't matter. Only the ticket (virtual or paper) for the DAS guest needs to be scanned by a CM, and then all linked guests automatically go along for the ride.

When we went, my friend's daughter came down in PJs, scanned in and then went back to bed for a few hours because we all do 7am early entry! My kids have never done that, they wouldn't dare miss early entry hours, but to each their own!

@DLgal, @midnight star, and any other regular DAS users at DLR: Has anyone regularly been able to get return times that include guests not scanned into the parks? Is this a glitch? Or a regular feature of DAS?

I can confirm this. My daughter has a DAS. When we “renew” it, they ask how many are in the party and everyone added to the DAS at that time must be present and have their tickets scanned. When we are not renewing her DAS and are getting a return time when we first enter the park, sometimes the CM asks how many people are with her, sometimes they don’t. When they haven’t asked, we’ve received return times for all three of us, even if my husband wasn’t with us. We also went to the parks with my in-laws over the summer. All of them were added to my daughter’s pass on the first day, but we entered the park before them on the second day because they are slooooooow in the morning. We were given a return time for 6 of us, but only my daughter and I rode the ride.

Thanks to everyone who answered my original question. No, I wasn't trying to cheat or game the system, I was honestly wondering if it was allowed. In my mind, as far as getting FP for him to use later in the day (for him, not extra for us), it is no different than if he were to scan in and then immediately head back to the room. He still isn't there in the park in person, but yet that's allowed. I do appreciate the answers.
