We bought some points last year and had them transferred into our account. We are now not going to be able to use them and would like to rent them. Is that possible?

Not sure I understand your terminology.
Do you mean that you obtained some OTUPs, some new contract and then transferred them between your accounts, or bought some points from another member and had those transferred to your DVC account?
You can make a reservation in someone elses name and then "rent" that reservation.

yeah, you technically cannot rent *any* points. we talk that way but that is not what is actually happening.

but if you have any kind of pts (banked/transferred in/borrowed or whatever) that can be used to make a reservation, then you can rent that reservation.

'Renting points' is just the way we describe making a reservation and then selling it to someone who requested a specific resort, certain dates, etc. The 'cost' or 'fee' the owner charges for this reservation is based on the number of points it took them to make the reservation - hence, they 'rented their points' out to someone. I think it's basically used instead of the word 'sold' or 'buy/bought' because the points a DVC owner actually owns is renewed each year - but 'renting points' is a one time transaction.

So, yes. If you have points that you can use to make a reservation and you find someone who is willing to pay you for said reservation, you can 'rent' those points. You'd make the reservation in the name of the 'renter' and then they'd pay you a fee equal to some amount of money times the number of points you had to use. You can do this for yourself (i.e., you find the person to 'rent' to) or you can use a middle-man service to find the person to rent to -- you'll always have to do the work of getting the reservation, regardless of which method you use. Generally, if you do it yourself you'll have to come up with a contract, figure out how you're going to get paid, etc. A middle-man service already has contracts and payment plans in place though of course s/he takes a fee off the top for aiding you in the process.
