Can you rent the little card you plug into your laptop to give you wireless anywhere? I am looking to get something for DS for this weekend. He is going to the beach with his dad and they are not paying for the internet in the condo. Anyone know somewhere I can rent this?

I don't know about renting, but they do have pay as you use.

I've seen the modems for sale in Wal-Mart or anywhere that sells pre-paid phones. You buy the modem for $99 (although some store had them on sale this week) and then you buy the minutes as you need them.

An option I am considering.....

I *think* DS can only get wireless if they have a signal down at the beach.

Is his computer setup to receive any wireless internet at home? (My PC has some type of wireless modem already inside that just connects with my wireless router at home.) If so, he might be able to just bring his PC into any Starbucks and/or McDonald's and hook into their free wireless service. He can at least check his email there.

Also have him Google Internet cafes in the area he's going to be. He might just "rent" service at a cafe, or a computer at Kinkos/FedEx. That's usually what I do when I travel.

You can, DBF checked because we have a laptop but not an always on wireless connection. We are going to Vegas next month and he wanted me to have wireless so I could surf while we drove but he found it wasn't really worth it. I don't know what or how he found it, I think he just did a search on google.

The wireless card uses its own signal, like people's Iphones and such, so you don't need a signal from the hotel, house, etc. I found some places online to rent, but its too late to get them before tomorrow afternoon. I could pay for a month through my carrier(AT&T), but would have to buy card and pay $60 for the data plan, and it is not unlimited, so DS could go over!

I guess he'll just do without for a few days. He will probably go into withdrawal, LOL! He is not old enough to drive to a Starbucks or anywhere with a hot spot. He may pick up on someone elses signal, but since you have to pay for it at the condo, I bet it is protected by a password.
