I have a trip to Aulani for the beginning of September…with the way things are going we are getting anxious about the trip…

I know our points will go into holding at this point that will expire at the end of July…was just curious if I can put them into RCI and will it give me longer time period to use?

Call the 1-800 number and see. There will be an option for you to book RCI, and that queue should not be as long. I was able to save some points last year, but I think there was a minimum of 100 points, and had to be increments of 10. The CM on the phone an walk you through it.

I will tell you have read a few reports that people have been given pixie dust and not had the points go into holding.

I would definitely call and see if you can get MS to give you that exception.

Thanks..I will give it a try if we feel we need to cancel.

We aren’t DVC members, but we have Wyndham. We can move points to RCI and they are good for 3 years. Not sure if DVC is the same, but I would check into it rather than losing points.

Welcome and thank you for your post!

I'm adding the below with the intention of "adding to help understanding." Please take it in that spirit?

DVC can also move points to RCI where they will be good for 2 years, to my understanding. The specific question in the original post relates to "holding points" which is DVC-language for "points that were redeemed from the fire." That is, points redeemed from a reservation cancelled after the "normal" cancellation window had passed. DVC "holding points" are tarnished and carry restrictions on their use ... thus the original question, "Can these barely surviving points be handed over to RCI for new life??"

I spoke with MS about this same thing today and I was told yes, points in holding can be put into RCI in increments of 10. There are also additional time restraints as to when it had to be done. I have a Feb use year and I was told I would have to deposit them into RCI by mid December. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info…that’s good to know…it might be a good option for us..I hope we don’t have to cancel but things keep changing every day..Hawaii just announced new protocols today

Sounds like holding points use the same "at least 45 days prior to expiration" rule as do any other points being deposited into RCI. So an RCI deposit isn't an option for late cancellations of reservations booked for a stay that occurs during the last few weeks of the use year. But it is an option for a late cancellation of a reservation made for a stay that occurs earlier in the use year.

Agreed…should work for me if I have to cancel..I have an August use year and my reservation I might have to cancel is September.

Ah! Thank you for clarifying. I have no answers on that one, then. Wyndham doesn’t do that. You just lose the points.

If a reservation is cancelled with all of the above protocols being followed....45 days before expiration, etc....then, are they still good for a little longer than the expiration if they are now in RCI?

Once deposited to RCI, it extends the life for 2 years. Since RCI goes by calendar year, it can be a little more than 2 years. for example, people with a Dec UY, would have had to deposit points in mid October 2021. Those points would be good for trips all the way until December 31st, 2023.
