I am getting sooooo excited right now, I leave this Friday! :cool1:
I am staying at AKL, and I am trying to make my money stretch as far as I can since it is the holiday time too. I was wondering if I can pay for my room charges and AKL sunrise tour using a check at the end of my stay?
I know I need a credit card to secure the room, but will they charge the card for this stuff, or can I pay with a check at the end of my stay?

Yes you can. We were at AKL at the beginning of November and I settled our bill the day before we left and payed with a check. There was no line at the check out area so I thought it would be a good time to do so. Any additional charges I just left to be paid by the CC I had on file, which were very minimal. It was quick and easy. There was almost always a line at the desk when we were there so I just wanted to take advantage of it being free and clear while I could. Have a great stay. I just noticed the Sunrise Tour part of your question - we didn't take that but I don't know why you couldn't pay for that with a check as well. We had charged meals and souvies, etc. to our room and then just paid it all with the check so you probably could pay for the tour as well.

We have done this several times. Works out great. We charge all week and then the day before we check out, pay the balance off with a check. This is also a good time to review the charges and make sure everthing is correct. Anything we charge from that point on, just goes on the credit card.
Have a great trip.

So you are charging on your room key? Assuming you won't charge the limit of what the resort is allowing without charging your card, then can I assume that they don't make daily charges to your credit card unit you hit said amount.:confused3 Am I even making sense?:headache:

I stayed at the Yacht Club in November, put a credit card on the room key and charged everything during our stay (food, gifts...) on the room key. Our credit card wasn't actually charged for it until the day we left.

By the way, I loved the convenience of putting everything on the room key. So much easier and quicker than fumbling with cash and change. We were given a receipt for every purchase, no matter how small (like I said we charged everything, even $1/$2 items) and then the night before we left, a bill was slipped under our door that had the total amount (which matched the total we had figured from our receipts) and an itemized daily list of each purchase. As long as we agreed with the bill we didn't have to stop at the front desk to check out. It was all very convenient and I'd definitely do it that way again.

When we stayed at the Yacht Club we hit the $1500 about halfway through our stay. They charged the $1500 and "reset" our credit. The remaining balance was charged at departure.

About 2 days into my last trip, my credit card was charged for everything up until that point (not the hotel stay, just the gifts/food/souvenirs we charged to our kttw card). So, I'm surprised that no one else's was charged until they checked out. If I was you, I'd be sure to ask about paying with a check at the end of your stay.

That's exactly what happened to me when I stayed at the Polynesian in August.

The "charge and reset" amounts are governed by the resort type:
$500 - Values
$1000 - Moderates
$1500 - Deluxe

It has nothing to do with who you are, your credit rating, what package you're on, etc.

I have not tried the pay-by-check method, but I'm thinking of it for our next trip. We geneally use our debit card, but we have been double-charged at the end of our last two trips. Very annoying to have to get that fixed as we're on our way home. :sad2:

We have never had charges to our credit card prior to hitting the $1500 charging limit. I usually check the charges about half way through out stay to make sure everything is correct and to see how close we are to the $1500.
I have heard that some of the resorts have a different credit limit, just heresay, I don't know this for a fact. I would just let the front desk know that you're planning to settle the account with a check prior to check out.

If you do want to pay with a check make sure you do this prior to your last day. As was mentioned, your bill gets slipped under your door the night before and the bill is already put on your credit card. On a previous visit I was able to change this (not having been a diser and having access to all this good information) and pay with the check but it was a big hassle. So this past visit I made sure to pay the day before we left and then just left the few purchases we made after that on the CC. We never hit the limit either at the moderate on the previous visit or the AKL this past visit so we didn't have to worry about them charging our card part way through. Since you get receipts for everything you purchase it shouldn't be too hard to keep a running total of how much you have spent so far and pay up if you are getting close to the limit.

1) You can pay by check at check-in or check-out. (no limits)
2) You can cash checks daily. ($50)
3) WDW uses a check clearing house, eg. Telecheck.

I know I need a credit card to secure the room
No, you don't.

You do NOT need a credit or debit card to secure your WDW resort room. You don't need to give them one to "have on file" for "incidentals" or anything like that.

This makes WDW a pretty unique hotelier. You can go totally plastic free. You can even do a room charge without plastic. You can also back it up with cash, travelers checks, even Disney Dollars.
