I am brand new DVC member (not yet in the system) and have another DVC member that has 150 points that are currently available from 2006. They will expire 1-31-08. I was interested in having these points transferred to me - but the person doing the transfer was told that they cannot transfer banked points. Is this so?
Thanks.

You cannot transfer banked points but you can bank regular points that have been transfered. If you want to rent from the other member who has those banked points, that member can still use those points to set up a reservation in your name; that particular method of renting is not considered a "transfer" of points.

That's correct. Banked points cannot be transferred.

However, Transferred points can be banked.

Edited: Looks like drusba and I posted at the same time. Well, at least we gave the same answser... :thumbsup2

Thanks so much. You all are a fantastic resource!

I saw a thread in which the writer explains that she has points left that she can't use, and it's too late to bank them. So - if she transfers them to me, I can bank them to next year? Why can I bank transferred points, but the owner can't bank them at all? Or, if it's too late for them, it's also too late for me?

I may be wrong, if I am I know I'll be corrected. You have to use the points before they expire. She can't bank the points because they are past her banking deadline, but are still good until her next use year. She can transfer the points to you, but that doesn't change when they expire. At least, that is how I understand it.

Right transferred points will retain their original resort and use year.

However, there is no banking deadlines on transferred points. The traditional deadlines don't apply and neither does the percentages. So it is currently possible that one can bank transferred points but the member who transfers them cannot. I expect this to change at some point but that's the current situation.

I've read this before, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Transferred points can be banked, even if they are past the banking window.
I have done this. My brother transferred his August VWL points to me, and I was able to bank them. I have March OKW. They did retain their home resort and use year. MS seems to have fixed the morphing problem. At least in my case. Hope this helps

Can you see the transferred points in your online acount or did oyu confirm this on the telephone with MS? -- suzanne

They will not show up in your account on line, as of right now. You must call MS and confirm. I was told to wait about 2 days for the transfer to take place and then call back to bank them.

Maybe, that's one of the reasons I hinted it might change. There are extra risks with transferred points so maybe an additional benefit might be justified. Frankly, I expect transfers will be eliminated sooner rather than later.

Dean a couple of yeras ago I would have agreed with that, but I just think with the new rules of one in or out a year that they have it contained into a managable number at this point. Eliminating it completely just seems pretty drastic. But, I guess time will tell.

It was one in/one out for years so I don't see that as a determining factor. My perspective is that from DVC's standpoint it's likely more trouble than it's worth. Plus I don't know any other points system off hand that allows actual transfers from one member to another. In the interim I'd expect an adjustment related to the banking rules and possibly a change to incorporate the 300% points in a given year to actually mean something.

I guess I can see that, from their standpoint there is little benifit to allowing transfers and the practice has certainly lead to a number of problems. But, I still think DVC would hear an outcry on this one, especially from people who have two different contracts who are no longer allowed to "combine" or people who need a few extra points to finish a reservation. Now, if DVC had a pool of "one time use points" that you could buy from them, say no more than 100 in any one use year, to complete reservations then eliminating transfers might be more palatable

That, I was not aware of, interesting.

Ok, so lets say I want to transfer 9 pts. from my VB contract into my BWV contract. The UY are different (June and March respectively). So if I transfer 9 pts. from June '08 UY into my March '08, but it is past the 8 months banking deadline for March, but not for June, I can still bank those transferred pts. that went into the March UY?

This is why I stay confused on this matter. I understand it to mean....if you are past your banking deadline....you can transfer those points and bank them.... as long as you are still in the banking window for the account they were transferred to.

Is this correct?

I understand that Worldmark, which is technicaly a vacation club, not a timeshare, does allow unlimited point transfers among members. There is very vibrant market, which includes a number of brokers dealing in points.

But which contract still needs to be in the 8 month banking window...the acct. that transfers from or the acct. that recieves the points? According to Dean, the banking window doesn't apply to transferred points, but I think it is the recieving acct. he is talking about. Help us out here Dean!! :confused3
