Hi: Can I make a calling card phone call to my home in ontario for no charge on my hotel bill if I use my calling card. I have heard that it is better to use a pay phone in the lobby, but I was wondering if others have tried using their calling cards with no phone charge on their room bill.

Deb.

If I remember correctly, unless you are calling on premises, they will charge you 75 cents for any call you make. This includes calling card calls and local calls outside of the resorts and parks. Depending upon what kind of calling card you have, some calling cards charge you extra minutes for using a pay phone. You will need to see which will cost you more, Disney's 75 cent charge or the calling card companies extra deduction from your total minutes. I use AT&T calling cards and I think I would come out ahead using the calling card from a pay phone.

Disney resorts charge you for any call including 800 numbers, out of your room and not to an on-premises number.

Some off site hotels including the Motel 6 have no surcharge for 800 calls and some local calls, and some phone cards using these numbers for access do not assess extra minutes or a surcharge at the start of each call. There should be a guide or card next to the phone stating the phone charges, or the check in desk should be able to give you one.

A small number of (non-Disney) hotels still block the calling card access numbers forcing you to use their preferred carrier and pay their full rates, but because these access numbers are so numerous these days and keep changing, you may still get through.

We used a number of pay phones around WDW to avoid the 75 cents charge on the hotel bill. I believe most (if not all) the pay phones gave us a message that there is an additional fee for using the calling card. I don't remember how much it was, but there is a charge against your calling card. In most cases it's probably easier just to pay the 75 cents and call from your room.

I bought a card at sams, so it will cost me $0.75 to call from my room!? roberry! LOL

I believe that the rate for using a pay telephone with my calling card was 10 units or about $.40. Depending on the time of day, length of your call and how urgent or private the conversation is; it's usually cheaper just to call from the lobby.

i was in dis last may and there was a charge for using the phone even with a calling card. i didn't use mine once the whole time i was down there! :earsgirl:

That is a .75 charge for the use of the phone basically. We used our calling card in the room on one of our visits. Even if no one answers at the other end, it is still .75 charge. When we went to check out we had a medium size phone bill! Even though we knew how many times we actually talked. We now also go to the pay phones if we need to. Double check when you check in.

You might want to check out the post about calling cards on the Canadian board. They highly recomend President's Choice calling cards, because there is no surcharge from a pay phone, and it's like 4 1/2 cents a minute. Sorry, I've never used them, but fully intend to next trip. There will still be a .75 charge if you call from the room.
