Can you get upgraded and be disappointed?

I could see it happening if you booked a SPH room 18 months in advance and really liked deck 5, to be disappointed in an upgrade to Cat 9, especially if one of the noisy rooms on deck 2.

I would agree with that...I've never had it happen, but if I were moved from a SPR to a room like 2626 (the worst I was ever in), I wouldn't be too pleased!

My friend got upgraded from CAT 12 to a Cat 10 this summer on the Magic. Her family was placed in one of the very noisy rooms on Deck 2. Her husband actually slept up on deck the first night! Guest Services moved them down the hall to a much quieter room the next night. They were happy with the new room.

Yes, it can definately happen, even if you book a higher category. We had friends who had booked connecting category 6's and were upgraded to connecting cagetory 4's. You'd think they would have been estatic!! Well, the 4's were VERY forward in the ship (they're 6's were mid-ship) and they had severe motion problems from being so far foward. They weren't happy at ALL. I've also read several reports of people who booked a certain category only to be moved to an undesirable location, though an upgraded category. I would be upset too. We booked a guarantee category 6 and NEVER will book guarantee again. We got 6556, which you think would ge a good room, midship and non-connecting. WELL, the room was SO LOUD I couldn't sleep. The entire room vibrated and during the day it sounded like hammering in the floor beneath us. After several calls to Guest Services they told us it was the high pressure water line they use to clean the decks ran underneath this cabin. Whenever they turned it on, usually at 3AM, our entire cabin would vibrate and you'd hear terrible noise. This also happened during the day too. We kept voicing our displeasure and eventually were moved to 8092, an upgrade to a 4. Now, this was almost as far aft as you can get and had a solid veranda, which was a bummer for our kids. But, we LOVE aft and took it to get rid of the noise. This location was quiet, with the exception of the connecting door and the kids next door who always slammed the door when coming/going.

With the demand for SPH rooms, they really should exclude them from upgrades to avoid potential disappointments. Maybe they do? Thanks for the replies.

What is "gurantee" about a category? And when you're upgraded, why don't they ask you first before doing it? I know folks spend a lot of time figuring out what location they want and will book exactly what they want, while others just book least expensive and hope for the best.

Just wondering...

They don't. I've read on the boards of people who were upgraded from SPH to category 9's they were unhappy about. All DCL sees is that it's a category 10 and they are moving you to a category 9. They don't classify the SPH as anything else. It's just a term that most DCL travel agents know about and of course those of us on the DIS.

Guarantee is when you book a category stateroom that is mostly sold out, and they can't give you a definate room assignment yet. They are hoping for cancellations (they usually get them) and will put the guarantees in those staterooms. You don't get to pick your stateroom, it's assigned to you. As someone who is very particular about what I like/don't like it was a pure leap of faith for me. We did get what DCL would consider a prime location, mid-ship, but it didn't work for us. We booked guarantee because we booked one of the West Coast Sailings and they sold out VERY quickly last summer in Dec 2004. It was the only way for us to get on the ship, so we took the gamble. For us we lost because we got a noisy room and had to move, but for others it works out great.

What did you hate about 2626? We were in 2624 last month and it was fine for us but I want to know what we were missing out on. DH heard some engine noise, but I slept right through it. However, it was our first Disney cruise so we had nothing to compare it to.

We have friends that booked a Cat 7 and were upgraded to Cat 3. (We also booked a Cat 7 and were not upgraded, but I digress).

They loved the Cat 3 - but they could here the chairs on deck above being moved and the scrapping of the chairs drove them nuts.

Now I'm nervious. I book gty cat. 6. I thought the noisy rooms were all on the lower decks. I figured all the cat. 6 (or above) would be ok. I know I might get a "white wall verandah" but that's ok with me.

Does anyone know of bad/noisy rooms at cat. 6 or above (besides the white wall verandah)?

THKs.

If you spend a lot of time picking out what you consider the perfect room/location, you can ask that a note be put in your record that you do not want an upgrade. This doesn't guarantee they won't upgrade you but hopefully whoever is processing the upgrades will take the time to read the notes and therefore skip over you. But then you won't be upgraded at all, so you may miss out on being moved to another perfect cabin in a higher category.

I think it would be easyto be disappointed in your upgrade.
My TA told me when she booked our next cruise since we are getting rooms across from one another for us and the children that she would put a note not to upgrade on the reservation. Not sure if this will help but it was her idea. She said this would keep one room from being upgrades and the other one not. This cruise is not with DCL.

Uh oh. I was lucky enough to score a SPH room & I don't care to have a different room. I'm going to call DCL today and let them know that I'll be grateful just to stay where I am!

I just assume that any room on the ship will be a bit noisy, it is a ship after all. Guest services gives out ear plugs if you need them. Worked out great for me! :cool1:

Thanks for the responses about "Guarantee" and also about what to do if you don't want to be upgraded. I learn many "something news" here every day!

Okay, I thought I knew the DIS lingo but you guys got me on a few:

SPH: ???
White wall verandah: ???

Thanks! :)

i have a silly question...for those who do not want to be upgraded...can you refuse the upgrade if they move you to a horrible room?

White wall verandah: ???
That's when the veranda in a room is solid white instead of the clear plexiglass kind. Only found in rooms in the aft portion of the ship.
