My dd14 is feeling crappy for the last few days. She had mono 4 years ago and she says she feels the exact same way, super tired and even after a full nights sleep she does not feel rested.

When she had mono 4 years ago it was around this exact time of year and she never had a fever or sore throat, just slept and had no interest in going to her dog handling class (which she lives for)
Well last night she had class and she didn't want to go. She has a new dog to work with and she is super excited to have this dog so I knew she was not feeling well when she wanted to miss class.

My neice (13) just had it a couple weeks ago and my sister who is a nurse said you can't get it again. Maybe she didn't have mono the first time, cause that seems a little young:confused3 Was she tested for it 4 years ago or did the doctor just say it was mono?

Actually you can get it at a very young age. My dd got it when she was 2and my ds got it when he was in the first grade. Poor DD had a pretty rough time with it when she had it but DS was a very mild case.

The doctor told me both times that yes you can get it more than once.

My neighbor's DD had it at age 5. It took them about 4 weeks to find out, they ran every test poosible, including checking for leukemia. They decided to test for Mono and yep. There it was. Dr said she could have easily gotten it from drinking out of a water fountain or sharing a drink.

She was tested for it 4 years ago and it showed she did have it. The only symptom she ever showed was extreme tiredness (sp??)
After a month, she bounced back and was back to her normal self. She is acting the exact same way which is why i am worried. I took off of work today and will get her to the Dr and then off to get blood taken if they want it.

My daughter had it twice. Once when she was a junior in high school and once when she was a sophomore in college.

Wow I stand corrected, I had no idea you could get it that young! My husband got it when we first started dating when he was 20 and I was 18 and I didn't get it from him! Shocking I know for people that age:rotfl: but I was feeling a little under the weather so I went to the doctor just to be sure and I was tested which was negative. The dr told me I probably already had it and didn't know that's what it was. At the time I though that was impossible because by husband had it soooo bad, he was off work for 6 weeks and lost 25 pounds! But now I guess you can have a mild case that is thought to be something else, but I still don't think you can get it twice.

yup! I was lucky to get mono 3 times...It was the same time each year for 3 summer's straight. I had worked all summer Monday-Friday 9-4at a camp for special needs kids and then would go straight to rehearsals for a huge theatre production I was in. By the end of the summer I was toast!! I finally had to stop working all summer because I hated getting sick!!

Have your daughter tested.

There are easy, cheap, effective blood tests.

It can tell if it is a new infection, or a recurrent previous (old) infection.

It could be Chronic EBV.
Just hope and pray that it isn't, because this is a known cause of chronic fatigue syndrome and illness.

My friends little girl had mono last year and she just tested positive again. My son also had it last year but his was very mild. In fact, when they tested him for it I thought they were nutts. But it turned out positive. :confused3

Before hearing about my friends little girl, I didn't think you could get it twice either.

I have a question about that too. My friends DD never slows down, she is a VERY active child. She is in several gymnastics classes each week and when she was sick last year she was in even more. I know that when you have mono, you are supposed to rest, right? So the other day, she was running a fever, my friend knew it was from the mono so she gave her meds, fever went down & she went to the gym. I would think she would need rest, right? The only reason I am thinking this is so that her "body" can get some rest & heal. OR, does it not matter? Just thinking on here... I don't care one way or the other, I was just wondering if the lack of rest is what brought the Mono out of it's dormant state.

You can't get mono twice in the way that you can't "catch" it twice, but symptoms from the previous infection can return. So sorry to hear about your dd I know personally how much mono sucks :sad2:

Most people actually get it when they're little, but usually young kids (under about 5, I want to say) don't show any symptoms, and it really isn't a big deal. Probably what happened to dgr1973!

If your dd gets tested and it shows negative, only that she already had it, I might not trust it. When I was 17 I started having all the mono symptoms but the blood work showed I was negative (but had already had it). Well I few weeks later my BF came down with mono so... I'm pretty sure the blood work was wrong :lmao:

You can also get it as an adult which I did not know… For some reason I always thought once you were past college, you didn't get it. You are also only contagious in the beginning. And some people are apparently immune to it.

Anyway, I got it in late August and still have occasional symptoms. I've been fighting through it as best as I can because I am trying to plan a wedding (which is this weekend). I have not taken any time off (I can't), but I do sleep more than usual on weekends and after work whenever possible.

When I first got it, I had no idea. I just thought I had a bad flu, and like I always do when I get a bad flu, I went to work anyway because otherwise I could lose my job for taking sick time. I'd get up, go and come home and try to stay awake and work on wedding stuff as long as possible but I really just wanted to sleep. No interest in doing anything else but sleep. And zero appetite. Worst sore throat ever.

After about 2 1/2 weeks of symptoms not going away I realized it wasn't just the flu and went in and was diagnosed with mono. I was horrified because I'd been going to work, using the same dishes and cups as my fiance etc. I was scared that I gave it to other people but they told me that while it's contagious, not everyone will get it. It's very likely that my fiance is just one of the lucky ones. Also, you can't really pass it on from just breathing in the same room as a person with it. And since I thought I had the flu, I was washing my hands and avoiding being near people anyway.

They told me I could continue going to work but to avoid any strenuous activities and close physical contact with people. They did warn me I would be exhausted and that it would be that way for sometimes 8+ weeks. They said that once you get it, it does stay in you pretty much forever and usually you won't get it again, but it's not impossible. (like with chicken pox… most won't get it twice, but plenty do).

I'm probably at about the 9th week now and I'm doing much better. The only real change I made to my daily life is I take a train to work now, instead of driving (for safety because of the tiredness) I probably would have been better sooner had I been able to actually sleep a lot and rest though. I'm sure someone will be angry that I went to work, but I'm not in a position where I can give up my job and I would have been fired for taking too much time off. It's sad that we sometimes have to choose between our health and our jobs but many people do.

So while your body craves sleep more with mono, it's not impossible to continue just doing what you normally do. You'll just feel like crap and be really tired, but it is possible.

The second time you get Mono, do they call it Stereo?

You sure can get it twice, or at least the symptoms the second time around. Two other friends and I caught the same nasty strain in high school and then later the three of us came down with it again as adults.
