Do they want to go to Northern Ireland or the Republic? You can definitely get to NI from Scotland by ferry (usually Stranraer to Belfast but you can also go to Larne) - we have done it. I am pretty sure you can get to the Republic as well, probably Cork or Dublin but I am not sure if you can do it from Scotland or whether you have to go from Liverpool
ETA: Having looked, it seems that you can only get across to ROI from further south, ie. Liverpool or Wales. It may be worth their while looking at flying or driving down to Liverpool (not that much further south than Stranraer)
there are ferries from stranraer and also from Troon to Larne, the seacat used to go from troon to belfast but not any longer think its just stranraer, they could also fly really cheaply from Prestwick airport to Dublin with ryanair check out the website cos i think they go to other places in ireland too., www.ryanair.com.
If they are driving they could get the ferry as mentioned , tour the North then on into the south, or drive directly to the south takes about 1and a half hours to Dublin from Belfast, they could then get the ferry from the south to Holyhead in Wales .
