My DH spoke extensively with a CM re: the DVC, but we never made the time to actually go through the tour, etc.....sooo...I'm a bit confused.

First of all, can you stay ANYWHERE you want within Disney?? or is it just certain places??? Is it a lot more expensive to stay say Poly concierge over VWL??? How does that work?

Has anyone regretted "buying in"???? What has been your experience???

You can stay 'almost' anywhere. I'm sure you know a lot of this already, but I'll just recap.

When you buy DVC you purchase a real estate interest in the Disney Vacation Club. Currently this includes 3-locations at WDW (Old Key West, Boardwalk Villas, and Wilderness Lodge Villas, (with Beach Club Villas due to be added late next year)). Outside WDW it includes Hilton Head, and Vero Beach resorts.

Unlike most timeshares where you purchase a specific unit for a specific week each year, in the DVC program you purchase points which are then 'spent' for accommodations. The number of points required depends on the resort, the season, and the room accommodation types. Point charts are provided which show the 'costs' in points. Using points at any DVC resort is the prime purpose of the program.

Additionally, they have several exchange programs available. Called the Disney Collection, you can use points to stay at other Disney properties. At WDW these include GF, AKL, BC, YC, Contemporary, Poly, Fort Wilderness, CB, CS, and PO. Note that there are no value resorts (All Stars), nor is Boardwalk or Wilderness Lodge included as they have their own DVC villas attached. (Also most likely, when the Beach Club villas are completed, it is expected that BC and YC will be removed from The Disney Collection. You didn't ask, but also within this collection are three Disneyland hotels, four Disneyland Paris hotels and 3, 4 or 7 night cruises on Disney Cruise Line.

After the Disney Collection, there is the Concierge Collection which includes resorts all around the country. There are currently 30 resorts listed in the Member's guidebook. Examples include the Grand Hotel at Mackinac Island, or the Kapalua Bay hotel, Maui, and so on.

Next is the Adventurer's collection. This includes backroads biking trips, rafting trips, African Safaris, or Alaskan Cruises.

Finally, like any timeshare, you can trade your Disney points for other timeshares around the world. In this case I believe you actually commit enough points for a specific Disney villa, and this is then exchanged through the external programs.

Various fees apply when doing exchanges outside the actual DVC properties. I don't know for certain if fees apply to WDW hotels or not.

To answer your other question, for comparison, a 1-B/R villa at Disney's Villas at Wilderness lodge would require 22 points weekdays - low season, 45 points weekends, or 40 points weekdays - high season, 75 points weekends.

Using your points for a Poly Concierge room would be 48 points, weekdays - low season, 86 points weekends. For high season, it would be 68 points weekdays, and 122 points weekends.

If you wanted a 2-B/R unit at Wilderness Lodge villas, for comparison, the points would be 30, 60, 50, 106.

As you can see, in all cases, you can get a 2-B/R unit for fewer points than you could get Concierge at the Poly.

Even garden view rooms at the Poly are 31, 56, 48, 86 points respectively. This is more points for a regular hotel room than a 1-B/R at Wilderness, and in most cases, more points than a 2-B/R unit at Old Key West resort (22, 54, 41, 100 points respectively)

This is why most DVC'ers feel that the best 'value' for their points is to use them at DVC resorts. Very often you can get discounted regular WDW hotel rooms that makes it more economical to pay cash if you want to stay there, and save your points for DVC accommodations. Of course, like anything else, there are always exceptions. (Sometimes using points for a Disney cruise is a good deal, and other times paying cash is the better deal. You just have to compare.)

Just for final information, if you use points in other than a DVC resort, then DVC will rent the unit you are not using (Studio, 1-B/R etc at one of the DVC resorts) out for cash. That cash is then used to pay the participating hotel for the accommodations they would be giving you, such as a Polynesian Concierge room. This is how that part of the program works.

Note that DVC has 5-seasons while the regular WDW hotels have 4-seasons, so you would actually need to compare on a date by date basis to determine actual point differences.

Hope all this helps.

Would you be kind enough to tell us the different seasons? We are thinking of buying but I do not have any idea of the point structure. We like to vacation in Oct but we are pretty flexible. We have sent away for the package but will that cover everything? Were there any suprises, pricewise that Disney did not go into for you?

The package you've requested will have the point chart for (I'm assuming) VWL. It will show the various seasons and the points required for studios, 1-br and 2-br on Sun-Thurs and Fri & Sat nights. After you get that I'm sure you'll have more specific questions. I don't remember if it included points for the different resorts.

There haven't been ANY suprises pricewise for us - unless you count when our annual dues went down. :D

It has been announced officially that the BC will be removed from the Collection but not the Yacht Club oddly enough...(this is on the website- I suspect the Yacht Club will be removed when they realize the oversight)

As to things not mentioned- the most obvious ones are the $75 fee for any nonDisney transfers (concierge/Adventure/Interval international) and for the Cruise line.

Also the maid service is different than at a resort...no daily maid service or coffee or soap or shampoo, towels, etc. You get a starter supply of coffee soap, shampoo, you get new towels every 4 days, maid service differs by length of stay but daily service is extra $$$ if you want it...

Just wanted to put my 2 cents in here. Kecall asked if he could stay anywhere on property and obviously as others have said, yes you can use your points to stay other places and others have also pointed out that it is not really a good value to use your points elsewhere in Disney. But I also wanted to point out once we saw a 1 Bedroom Villa we didn't WANT to stay anywhere else. You get a Bedroom seperate from the Living Room so if someone wants to go to bed (spouse or kids) the rest of the family doesn't have to go as well (as you know in a regular resort room, there is only one room, so once lights are out, everyone goes to bed). Also, there is the washer and dryer, and the kitchen. Don't get me wrong, I don't cook much while I am there, but the fridge and microwave come in really handy. Oh, and don't forget the Jaccuzzi tub. So in conclusion a night or two at another resort to see what it is like if you have never been there, is fine, but once you go DVC you rarely go back to a regular resort.

Thanks for everyone's response! I'm understanding the whole thing a lot better now. My DH was ready to "sign on the dotted line" when we were down there...wish I had taken the time to go through the tour to be so sure myself.....All this info. helps, though.

To answer the last question, we enjoy our membership and are glad we made the jump! Without it, I doubt we'd ever take a vacation. BTW, we've stayed at CS (and BWI, but it was the Steeplechase Suite - absolutely amazing!). I don't thing we'd ever use points to stay anywhere else! The villas are sooo nice and spacious. :)

To answer your last question, also - we have had no regrets buying DVC. We have been twice to OKW (our home resort), once on the Disney Magic and will be going to OKW again in 2002, since we purchased at OKW in 1997. An added bonus for us - and maybe for you too since you live in MD - is the availability of places to exchange in the Northeast. In addition to our trips to WDW, we have stayed for a week-end at The Plaza in NYC (which we never would have done otherwise) and will be staying at the Shelburne Murray Hill in NYC for a week-end in early December. All in all, we are very pleased with our purchase at DVC!!!

kecall, Happy Anniversary!!!!

Cool to celebrate it where you went on your honeymoon.

We bought DVC cause we love going to WDW and we would never be able to afford the level of accomodations that we get DVC. Now we can go twice and stay at a deluxe!
And it forces us to vacation! And we get to do it for the next 40 years!

kecall -- we don't live too far from you (maybe an hour?) if you'd like to get together and look at our membership stuff. We just bought into DVC this past May and are looking forward to many happy, luxurious, relaxing trips. My DH is a fanatic and is on the phone asking ??? all the time. We would be most happy to share what we know!

5 days and counting!!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Thanks for all the positive responses....think I'm gonna have to call Disney for more info.

Thanks, CrazyBoutDisney, for the offer....have a wonderful time (as I know you will!) By the way, my brother lives in Cascades, VA....are you anywhere near that area???

Member since 98 and no regrets here.

I love the space, the kitchen ect. It would be difficult for my family to stay in a regular hotel room now. They are spoiled to DVC.

kecall--we live in Ashburn which is right next to Sterling in Loudoun County. I'm betting your brother actually lives in Sterling--Cascades is the name of a development there. According to the post office, there is no Cascades, VA -- it's technically Sterling. But people everywhere around here use the name of their developments as if they were cities!!

I'm serious about letting you look over our membership materials if you like. I've been wanting to come up to Thurmont to check out a fabric outlet I heard about, anyway! If you don't want to, that's OK too -- don't want to intrude. Feel free to email me.
