Can you cut a night off your stay, if the period is sold out?

Curious...

Can you cut your stay by a day (the last day), if there is no more availability at the hotel? I was thinking about possibly doing this, so I could stay the final night elsewhere, but thought they might not allow a change like that, if they're sold out?

If you have a package reservation you must make this change prior to 45 days out - for a room only I think it must be done like 6 days out from your arrival.
