I searched the DVC website and couldn't find anything about this. We are going back to WDW in July 2009, prior to our cruise. I want to book at SSR, our home resort, DS wants to go to AKL. I don't want to risk not getting a room at 7 months with AKL.

If we book SSR and at 7 months decide to go to AKL can we change the reservation?

AKL is beautiful but SSR feels more "disney" to me.

Yes, but it will based totally on availability.

Basically, you're just cancelling one reservation, and booking a new one, based on availability. You aren't actually 'changing' your existing reservation.

Nothing financially, but if your new reservation requires fewer points, you'll have points left over to use before the end of your use year. Unless you can still bank them. But if you borrowed them, you won't be able to unborrow them. You'll need to ask MS to use the borrowed points first and then try to bank (if you are within your banking deadline) the current year points left over.

And, likewise, if the reservation requires more points, you'll have to ante up more points for the reservation.

If you have enough points to book at last 2-3 days of the new AKV reservation before you start canceling the SSR room, you'll be better off and have much less risk.

It's easy to change your reservation. I'm in the process of doing a day by day reservation change right now for July and so far so good. (knock on wood.) But I booked at my home resort back in September just to make sure I'd have a room.
