My husband came home and told me this riddle that I have yet to figure out. Here goes.........Three men shared a $30 a night hotel room. $10 dollars each....ok the hotel clerk remembered later that there was a special and should have only charged them $25....so she sends a bell boy to the room with a $5 refund.The men give the bell boy a $2 tip and each man keeps $1. If each man pays $9 {3 times 9 is 27} and the bell boy has $2 tip that totals $29 so where is the other $1 ?????????? I heard this a long time ago but brain dead at the moment. Any ideas??????????/

:confused: Each man pays $8.33 each on the room, the bell hop gets $2, each man gets $1, and there's a penny leftover.:confused: I'm confused.

I thought I was confused until I seen Shannons answer, she is really confused

The room cost 25.00, they gave the bell boy a 2.00 tip and they each kept a dollar. It equals 30.00... It might not be equally split among the three men but the riddle never says that it is once the refund is issued. I could be wrong but that's how I see it. :)

Okay, editing because I re-read it and I think the bell boy's tip could be included in the 27.00 (9.00 each), then there is a dollar left for each of them.
:confused:

Each of the 3 man gave the clerk a $10 bill equaling $30 then the bell boy gave them back $5 of which each man kept $1 each and tipped bell boy the other $2 but that means each man paid $9 each but 3 times 9 is $27 plus the $2 tip equals $29 so where is the other $1.... Does this make more sense???

What's confusing me is that they didn't pay 27.00 dollars, the room was only 25.00.... include the bell boy's tip in that and the three they kept and it evens out...

Sure they paid 9.00 each but it wasn't all for the room.
:confused:

4disneyfans, no, I'm still confused, but I am 1/2 blonde.;)

Jason, it doesn't take much to confuse me sometimes.:teeth:

Each man did not pay $9 for the room........they paid 25 dollars divided by 3, so, $8.33, and one would have paid $8.34.

If they didn't give the bellhop the $2, they would have had to divide it, and the extra cent would have shown there.

The "riddle" is using faulty math.

Each man DID pay $9.

9x3=27 total paid

total paid = hotel + tip = 25 + 2 = 27

Why the "riddle" wants to ADD the 2 to the 27 is beyond me (faulty algebra). The 2 should be added to the 25 to equal out.

9x3=25+2 is the correct equation

The person who wrote the question probably doesn't understand algebra well, or is trying to fool people who don't.

(which is the same thing the Princess Michelle and the last poster are saying, only worded in a way that works for my brain)

Each man didn't pay $9 for the room though, they paid 25 divided by 3.

Then they paid $2 in addition to the bellhop, or $2 divided by 3.

The 3 men got back
1.66
1.66
1.67
And with the $2 tip that means they each had $1 left over since they used their change for the tip.......
SO that's a $25 room and the men each have $1($3) and their change made up the $2 tip and that equals $30....The room was $25 not $27....

Thank you to everyone! I had thought I figured it right but kept thinking I had missed some "obivious punch line" somewhere.The person who told it to my DH probably knew we would be looking for a punch line instead of obvious answer. Guess he got us after all!! Thanks again to all!
