As you can see by my tags, I love pizza. more specifically, papa johns pizza. But in the past 2 years they've added surcharges, up to 2.00 (that is what it is here where I am, I don't know if it's regional or country wide). I hate to say it (and do it!) but I just can't deal with a 2 dollar charge on pizza. Charging 2 dollars for me to buy something from them :confused3

To be honest, I wouldn't have that much of a problem with it, but from what I've read and heard people say, the driver gets none of that. They pay their own gas, car maintenance, and rely on tips to supplement their 'income'. So where is the $2 going?! On top of that, pizza prices are up as well, which is understandable because grocery prices are up. but I just don't understand how they get away with that charge. Does anyone know what they're doing with that money?

Maybe you should write to Papa John's corporate to get the answer to your question, unless it is just a delivery charge used to cover the delivery person's salary.

I ordered Papa John's last night. Pizza was $14, (large cheese) surcharge was $2.50, tax was $1 and I tipped $3 (because the surcharge doesn't go to the driver) which made my pizza way too expensive!!!!!

That is the last time I'm ordering...DH usually orders and I had no clue about the fees but now I know! UGG!

I know what you mean!!! I HATE to pay that.

For that very reason, we started going to pick up our pizzas. It's only about 2 miles. Plus I have their phone number programmed in my cell phone so I can call on my way home. :thumbsup2

We never order from any of the big chains. We like the mom and pop places much better! None of our local mom and pop's charge a delivery fee.

My favorite local place doesn't deliver, only the chains deliver here. :( Otherwise, I'm all about the local place!! YUM! I normally call it in and pick it up but it was pouring yesterday, LOL.

We only pick up ours too. I usually try to plan it while running another errand or coming home from work since I pass right by.

Eventhough gas prices are coming down I doubt a lot of these surcharges and price increases that were added on for fuel will go away.

That is out of hand!! way too much money for a pizza.

DiGiorno!
  :scared:
I've tried that stuff, it's terrible!

To me, there is nothing like a papa johns pizza. I wasn't really that big a fan of pizza until papa johns came along. I don't know why, because a lot of people really dislike their pizza - including my mom and my SO, but I really love it. I also really love the new wheat crust (do they even have it anymore? The last time I ordered their pizza was when that came out and my SO had to go out and pick it up).

It's my understanding that these surcharges don't actually pay for the fuel anyway. Can anyone confirm or deny that pizza delivery people have to pay their own gas? and I don't think they get any of that money. Maybe it's to help pay their income. :confused3

the surcharge is $2 here. I've gotten away from pizza delivery .. we either get carry out (when we're in town) or Papa Murphy's.

That surcharge is for the additional cost in getting the food to your store. The food that is delivered to your local store has fuel surcharges added onto the freight bill. This is why we saw grocery prices (as well as other goods) increase over the past year or so. The cost to deliver it to the stores as increased. Fuel is slowly going down and the truckers are getting less in fuel surcharges because it is typically on a sliding scale based on the Dept of Energy National Avg. But the stores probably won't lower their prices. I know this is probably more detail than anybody wants but its what I work will all day. :flower3:

Thank goodness I live in a University town ... no one charges for delivery here!

I was brought up in Chicago do have to say that I think that Papa John's is :scared1:. To each their own, I guess ... someone needs to keep Papa John's in business!

I've never had Papa Johns. We don't have any near us. We do have a local place that has really good pizza. It's a total hole in the wall, dive, but it's so good! I think we're going to have to get pizza on Friday night after this conversation. We haven't had it in a while.

DH worked for Dominoes several years ago, and they did get mileage.

All that will happen if they remove the surcharge is that prices will go up and they'll offer special deals if you go collect - which is what happens in the UK. Large Domino's £12.99, £7.99 if you go get it. Pizza Hut - buy one get one free on collection, etc.

LOL thats how I feel. Blech Papa John's!

I looooooove me some Papa John's!! :cloud9: But I'm too cheap to ever have it delivered. Plus, Mondays are when you can get a large 1-topping for only $5.99 carry-out only. It's the only reason I love Mondays. :)
