Can we build a snowman out of sand?

We are going to take a picture on the beach for our Christmas card.

I thought it might be cute to build a sand snowman.

Is there something natural we can use to make the sand stick together or is it hopeless?

Thanks in advance for any help. :sunny:

What a great idea!

The only thing I know of is using the water. Maybe a sand castle builder will respond for you.

My DH thought maybe you could build one lying on the beach. Might be easier than trying to build up tall. Know what I mean?

Yes, water will help the sand stick together. Not a ton of water, but just enought to make it stick. Have a spray bottle handy when you try it. I think it could be done!

I love this idea! We are going to be in Hawaii over Christmas and staying right on the beach. I'd like to try this, too.

Like another poster said, it would probably be easier to make one flat on the sand, but one standing up would really be neat.

I do like the idea of the flat one, too.

Maybe we will try both. :sunny: I'll let you know if it can be done and try and post a pic if it turns out.

I suppose we could make one lying down with his head resting in his hand (kinda like someone laying on the beach) and then the kids could sit behind him or in front of him.

Thanks for the ideas. :flower:

Sounds like a very neat idea whether standing or lying down. If y'all do it please take a picture and share with us.

They have the national sandcastle building competition here in Virginia Beach every year. One thing I noticed is that some of them use a solid base underneath the sand (ie: block of wood or some solid object) and another thing is the water on the sand. I am not quite sure how they do some of them because they truly are spectacular.

BTW, you idea is a super one! I would love to hear how you make out and see pictures of what you come up with.

i've heard that sand sculptors use liquid starch in a spray bottle to help hold their stuff together.

That would be so neat. If you do build one make sure you post some pictures of it.

Thanks for the links.

Do you think it would be okay to use the liquid starch on the beach? (environmentally speaking)

My dad is pretty good at making sand castles for the kids...but he is by no means a professional at it, just for the kids for fun. I am not sure if you could get these supplies, but what we would do is take a 5 gal. bucket, my dad has one with a small hole drilled into the bottom with a stopper. We would fill the bucket with sand and add a little water. Flip the bucket over onto the ground and then unplug the hole to release the suction. If you have the sand right, it will slide out of the bucket and remain standing. I would do this twice, so that you have two bucket shapes on top of each other. Then, build a ball on the top for the head and use a toy shovel or something to shape the body. Just some ideas...also, you have to pick the right spot on where to put your sandman. Too close to the water and a wave will get him, so far and the sand is too dry and hot. What I do is look for the line in the sand where the wave reach is. You can usually tell because it is where the wet-ness ends or there will be debris such as shells or seaweed there. I usually go for a foot or two behind this line, away from the water's edge. HAVE FUN :cheer2:

Make the snowman lying down like someone else suggested.
Take a picture of your family (standing up).
Photoshop the two pictures together. You would need to change the area around the snowman from sand to blue sky (with photoshop), but it might work!
