Can they do this?

My daughters high school has had 4 bomb threats....3 written on the boys bathroom walls and 1 written on the girls. So far they have banned backpacks and large purses. I don't think this is too unreasonable but today I think they went too far. They took the doors off of the stalls in the girls bathrooms. I think this is a major invasion of privacy, especially when it's that time of the month. Is there anything we can do legally to get them to put the doors back on? I'm calling my complaint in to the school in the morning. There are cameras to see who is going in and out of these bathrooms. I really need to know if they can legally invade a persons privacy like this.

Am I understanding you correctly? It's just the stall and commode with openness?'
I'd contact the media. Seriously.

I hope there is something that can be done, because that is so wrong.

I have no idea about whether or not it's legal...but I have to say that I am sitting here, jaw on desk, not believing what I am reading! If I were a parent of a child in this school I would be outraged. That is not reasonable...to expect these kids to use the toilets with no privacy to others in the bathroom. And maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see what difference it would make anyway...doors or no doors. How is this going to stop the threats and/or protect the kids at the school?

If I had a kid, I could not make them go to a school that did this. I'd withdraw them ASAP and send them somewhere else.

That's what they used to threaten to do to us because some girls smoked in the restroom. I don't understand how not having doors on the stalls will deter bomb threats either. These are kids, not animals, and they should be given their privacy in the bathroom.

Yeah, Id definatley contact your local news station. Thats disgusting.

Absolutly WRONG!! I would let my voice be heard loud and clear.

That is horrible! If I were you I would go up to school and not leave until the doors are put back on the stalls. Teenage girls are especially sensitive and they deserve that small level of privacy. I hate hearing stories like this. Instead of doing something that could really solve the problem, lets just do some random stupid thing that won't really help at all.

I have seen plenty of boys restrooms without stalls, and occasionally a girls one. Mostly in high schools. My husband said he used toilets without stalls all the time - his fraternity did not even have walls - just rows of toilets.

You gotta go, you gotta go. It is not like anyone is staring at people using them. I have used them in the past - it is a little weird, but I got over it.

Yes you read right...no doors whatsoever. I plan on making a huge stink about it tomorrow, they had early release today and it was too late by the time that I got home to call anyone over there. My jaw dropped too. I have 2 daughters and they were totally p.o'd when they told me. I guess I'm just wondering if I have a "legal leg" to stand on if it comes down to it. It makes me so sad that it has come to this...I graduated from this school myself..this is rural Wisconsin for G**sakes. The school isn't as small as it used to be but the good kids are really taking the brunt of this. I want better security but this is ridiculous.

to chicagodisneyfan...this is not something that you "get over". Would you want someone walking in on you in the middle of a tampax change? Sorry to be so graphic but I think this is a human right to have privacy. We don't leave the doors open at home, why have it where there are 800 kids?

If this were my Dd's school I would be furious.
As another poster pointed out, I don't think this will deter bomb threats.

it's rediculous! i'd rather go pee in the woods!

why don't you tell the school to post someone in each bathroom, an attendant, until things calm down. they do it in nightclubs, why not at school?

I'll assume it's an administration knee jerk reaction to writing on the walls. Keep the doors off so that no one will have privacy to write a threatening message.

It would have been more effective to confiscate all pens, markers, lipstick, etc. by a uniformed guard as kids enter school. Then the teacher could pass them out in the classroom and not allow a child to leave until they turned it back in.

Then we would all be safer.......

Waaaay back in the 70's they took off the doors to deter smoking. I know a lot of you think it's horrible but I and every girl I went to school with got used to it-feminine hygeine and all. Our gym teacher made us walk naked into the showers w/o a towel and made sure we showered and issued towels on the way out of the shower. I guess it's what you get used to. We did get our doors back when the whole student body petitioned and got permission to have a student smoking area :scared1: Yes indeedy we underage kids had our own smoking area on school property. Of course we were supposed to obtain parents permission and have a special pass to use it, but they never enforced that. Geez what were we all (especially the adults) thinking. Different time and place. as far as the door thing in this topic I'm sure it's not to deter the bomb threats but to catch who is writing them.

You know, these kids have photo student i.d's. I'd think that they could have the teachers take turns between classes monitoring these bathrooms, have the kids sign in and note the time. They already have aides escorting them during classes. They could check the walls every 1/2 hour or hour and take note to see who was in there. I don't understant why they have to go to such extreme measures. I highly doubt that it's going to stop anyone from writing on the wall or doing it somewhere else for that matter.

I totally agree. This is not something people should get used to. What'll end up happening is everyone will want to use the bathroom during class when the bathrooms are more likely to be empty. I really hope this was just a knee jerk reaction like someone said and once the admins have a chance to think about it, they'll put the doors back on.

BTW, OP, you didn't mention the boys' bathroom. Did they do the same in there? What about the faculty bathroom, if there is one?

I totally do not agree with this. I am sure they are trying to get the students who are writing the threats by using the other students. They probably figure if they do something so drastic the offenders will get turned in so the doors will be put back on.

This is what happens when everyone is so PC and says to each their own, it's none of my business.
