One reason there is a bit of a scramble to do online check-in at midnight eastern on day of check-in is to secure early PATs - everyone gets a chance to fight Hunger Games style for these!
Note - If you are using DCL transport from hotel to port then choosing a PAT does not matter.
Luckily as a new cruiser you have just as much of an opportunity to select a early PAT as someone sailing in their 100th cruise lol… the only other people who automatically get the 1st boarding group are concierge guests… I logged onto my res at 12am and was done by 12:06 and got group 6… not fast enough lol

You probably couldn't have done better. Group 1 is concierge, sure. The other low group numbers seem to be reserved for DCL buses these days. Back in October, a bus from the Hyatt was group 2. In February, it was group 5.

I'm not sure how strict they are with BG's. When we went in JAN on the Dream we were 11 and the sign said boarding 1-8 and we were told to board. He never even looked at our paperwork.
Experiences vary on that. It is sometimes true but isn't guaranteed to be true. I used a DCL transfer in October to Miami, and upon arriving at the port, we were taken off the bus and they pointed us toward the front door of the port, where our PATs were examined, and we would have had to wait in line had our PAT been later.
