This was in the bottom of an email I received form Chadwicks today...

"UPS, the UPS brandmark and the color brown are registered trademarks that are used with permission by its owner, United Parcel Service of America, Inc. All rights reserved."

They have trademarked the colour

BROWN

?????

ideas? :)

Seriously???? How can you trademark a color?

OMG...I'll have to change my hair color!!

Denise < --- not like it's been every color in the world already...;)

Actually, companies can copywrite corporate colors and it is common. Think of Barbie Doll boxes from Mattel. This is a copywrited color. It basically means that a specific ink formula was created for the printed materials and the ink is copywrited. Therefore, Mattel has copywrited pink -- or a specific blend of it.

This stuff is really quite cool. Does UPS actually own the color brown? No, but it does own the custom blended color ink that makes its corporate color. And since UPS is known by the nickname Brown, they choose to say they own the color brown. It is just marketing. Psychologically colors are very important in branding a company. Think red--you may associate it with Coca-Cola (yep, they have this color red trademarked), think blue, you may think Big Blue and IBM. Hope this helps. Sorry I've rambled, but I'm a true color geek!

dvcfamily41801....if you claim green, the Disers will all have to check in with you before wearing ribbons, ears etc. to WDW! What 'cha gonna charge 'em for the privledge??? :teeth:

I want Black.

And I'm going to charge a LOT for all those limos etc to use it. Somehow a mustard yellow limo just isn't going to look as nice as a lovely, copywrited BLACK limo ;)

I should make enough in royalties to go to Disney a few times a year.

COLOR BROWN is trademarked as to uniforms and vehicles to prevent other companies from copying look alike uniforms and vehicles.

Trademark law - protects the name or mark associated with the product to which they are attached. A trademark is any word, name, symbol, color or sound that is adopted and used by a company to identify its goods and distinguish them from those manufactured or sold by others. Service mark is the same as a trademark but identifies a service and not a product.

a. Examples of trademarks – Nike, Just Do It, Nike Swoosh design
b. Can be a color – Brown for UPS, Orange label for Veuve Clicquot champagne, Pink for Owens Corning insulation materials
c. Can be a sound – MGM’s lion roar, NBC chimes

Another color I know trademarked is Blue by Tiffany.

No fair, you aren't charging me for my black car! ;)

I'll claim indigo! (Indigo girls need to pay me now!)

I suppose I will have to settle for puce. It's probably the only color not trademarked yet ;)

I'd be willing to sell you Sea Foam or Salmon if your are interested.

I don't see why a color can't be trademarked if a letter of the alphabet can be. :)

Back in the day (and I KNOW I'm 'bout fixin' to date myself here), there was a cartoon about a female rockstar and her band. The cartoon was called Jem. The creators were gonna call it just "M" but they couldn't because the fledgling rock video station MTV had already claimed the letter M. So it became Jem instead.

I know..I know. I am older than dirt. :)

Does Trading Spaces know that? Either Hildi or Gen did a Tiffany room and matched the blue perfectly. (And, of course, ruined the room with other stupid elements, but the blue was NICE!)

I wonder if Crayloa tradmarks their colors? :scratchin
