Can someone please explain the egg/hatching thing?

I think I missed this. I've seen the eggs, and the questions about hatching, but I can't even tell what has hatched!

They're a link to a graphics site-when you click on the egg you're taken to the home page of the graphics place. The egg "hatches" on a certain day and you don't know what kind of creature it will be. Then you can watch your thing grow up. It's sort of a neopets thing.
