I keep seeing this term and am unclear about what exactly "reservation points" means. This is when you cancel something and can only use those points as "reservation" points? What exactly is this restriction and when does it occur?

:scratchin I am wondering! Thanks!

Whenever you make a reservation at a non-DVC resort, cruise or adventure package, the points become "reservation points". They can no longer be used to book DVC resorts. If you cancel, they must be used to book another non-DVC trip. The reason is, when you convert the points, DVC then rents out the DVC accomodation for cash to pay for whatever other trip you have chosen to take. If they gave you back the DVC points, the room would in essence be "double booked".

Thanks for the quick response! (and very nice explanation of the whole thing!) It all makes sense to me now.
And this applies to all non-DVC, including Disney Collection hotels...right?

If you cancel, they must be used to book another non-DVC trip.

This is exactly what happened to me. We had 3-day cruise reserved on points... then we had to cancel. As a result, we've had to book non-DVC resort stays here and there, to use up the points. This Thanksgiving we're at Grand Floridian, instead of our usual VWL or BWL. Live and learn!
