Can someone help my 5th grader with this math problem?

I'm at a loss! Math isn't my strong subject! :rolleyes:

It says:

Find the missing numbers and landmarks for the set of numbers:

18, 20, 20, 24, 27, 27, ?, 30, 33, 34, 36, 36, ?

a. Range: 22

b. Mode: 27

c. Minimum: ?

d. Maximum: ?

I hope someone can help. Thanks!

the two missing numbers have to be 27 and 40. 27 is one of the missing numbers because it says that the mode is 27. mode means the number in the set that appears most frequently. since 36 and 20 appear most frequently 27 would have to be one of the numbers to be the only mode.

the other number has to be 40 because the range is 22. range is the maximum value in a set minus the minimum value. 40-18=22.

edited to add, so then obviously the minimum would be 18 and the maximum would be 40.

? = 27 (because the mode is 27 ,meaning that number appears the most)
?=40 because the range is 22, which would be the amount between the first and last numbers.

Minimum = 18 I assume
Maximum = 40 I assume

Caitycaity,
how funny that we answered at the EXACT same moment!

Thank you! I was just coming to post that I 'thought' we figured it out and you just confirmed our answers. Thanks so much!

Like I said math isn't my strongest subject. :blush:

Hahahahaha...I had to ask my 8th-Grader and I took analytical geometry and trig...hahahahahaha.

Anyway, DD says that here is the logic:
a. Range is smallest number subtracted from the biggest number, so 22+18 = [the missing last number].
b. Mode is the number that appears the most, therefore the other missing number is: the mode
c. Minimum is the smallest number, that first one, yeah, THAT one
and
d. Maximum is the largest number, yeah, that one on the end that used to be missing ;) .

hth, agnes!

My DD is like me. She just doesn't get math. So she can't seem to retain things she's learning for long. She learned mode, range, minimum and maximum last year but couldn't remember what they were. So once I looked them up and got their meaning then she suddenly realized how to do it.

She wanted me to say again 'thank you' from her! :wave2:

tell your dd there is hope. i was abysmal at math from elementary school-college. i had to take statistics in my MA program though and then it was like everything finally clicked. i am not the best at it now, but at least i usually can follow what is going on.

i had a math teacher that used to say i was stupid at math and would never be able to do any kind of math related career (that is worth a whole other thread inanof itself, not a very nice teacher! :rolleyes: ) and i frequently wonder now what that teacher would think if they knew my secondary field in my ph.d. program was quantitative methods (i.e. statistics). :teeth:

I will tell her. I know what you mean though about eventually getting it. That's what happened to me in college; it finally clicked but because its not my strong suit (or my favorite), I can't seem retain it if I don't keep doing it regularly. My DH, on the other hand, is amazing at math. He took Physics 1, 2, 3, and Calculus 1, 2, 3 in college and got all A's!

That's horrble that your teacher said that. I had a mean teacher in 5th grade; her favorite saying was "Are you deaf, or dumb, or what?" but this was in Macau (near China), not here in the US.

Anyway, thanks again.
