The day we are planning to go to HS the hours are 9am-8pm, with Fantasmic shows starting at 6:30 and 8pm. If I wanted to go to the Boardwalk for dinner and then boat back to HS to see the Osbourne Family lights around 8pm, would I be able to get back in? I don't understand how the park closes at 8pm but then the fantasmic show starts at 8pm? How does this all work??

You would need to be in the park BEFORE it closes officially at 8pm.

It's not unusual for Fantasmic to begin at park closing, and often it begins 30 minutes AFTER the rest fo the park officially closes. To be able to see Fantasmic, you will need to be in the park, past the tapstyles a bit before official closing time. Don't cut it to the last minute or you won't only get in the park, you won't get to see the show. And they will be turning off the Osborne lights in a way to help clear the park towards the entrance-which is what Fantasmic also helps to do. ;)

But will Osbourne Family lights still be on after 8pm, or is it lights out(so to speak) at 8pm?

I think you will be fine as long as you make it into the park before closing. I think the Osborne Lights run for 30+ mins after park close.

If the park closes at 8pm, the lights will be shut off around that time, but not 8pm on the nose. They will be attempting to move guests towards Fantasmic and out of the park at that time. (A lot of the other attractions will close prior to 8pm as well.) They will not keep them on until Fantasmic ends. They will be attempting to clear the park as Fantasmic is going on and then route everyone from the stadium out of the park when it ends.

Epcot closes most of the year at 9:00pm and Illuminations is at 9:00pm. Same thing.

Not true. I've only seen the Osborne Lights after Fantasmic. They keep the lights on for probably an hour after the park officially closes. Read this post from Robo that explains why:

From Josh - "The Osborne Lights are kept on for one hour after official close. The least crowded time to view them is from official Park close through the final song, which is typically 9pm. If you’re seeing the 8pm Fantasmic and the Studios “officially” closes at 8pm, you won’t arrive in time to see much of the Lights. So there are a few give/takes there."

You must enter the park before 8 PM.

Yes, Fantasmic starts at 8 PM but that's all that's happening. As soon as the show is over, the guests leave the park. When Osborne is playing they do leave it running for awhile after the official park closing. Great time to see the lights. Most guests will have left.

You can attend either Fantasmic or Osborne if you are already in the park when 8 rolls around - but at 8 they will stop admitting any new guests to the park.

It's the norm to have the nighttimes shows,Wishes,Illuminations and Fantasmic start at the parks closing time, actually for Fantasmic its even more normal to see the parks closing times be 8 or 9 and Fantasmic start 30 minutes after the closing time.
