Can someone help---airline carryon size limits?

Okay, I found the limits for Southwest's carryons, but I guess I am a dunce. This is what the site says

10in x 16in x 24in (length x width x height)

So, width is how FAT the bag is from the top to the bottom when it is laying down, length is from one side to the other and height is from the ground to the top when the bag is standing up? Am I right or do I have it all wrong? I have a problem because I think of length and height as the same thing. I wish there was a picture that showed a bag and how it was measured.

Stand the bag up.

It can't be more than 24 inches tall.

From left side to right side, it can't be more than 16 inches wide.

Now lay it down. From the bottom to the top of the bag, as it is laying down, (the thickness of it), it can't be more than 10 inches.

As long as there are 3 measurements that fit within the requirements, it really doesn't matter which "side" is which, or whether it's standing up or laying down.

I've seen what I call the depth.. (or how high the bag is when it's packed)exceed 10" plenty of times. In fact, if truth be told..I've exceeded it with my own luggage. I've never had an issue, and have flown Southwest many times. Many cases have zipper compartments that allow the bag to expand so it can accommodate more.

Thanks, that helps. My sister let me borrow a smaller carry on bag, but I don't think it will hold everything. I need to find something a little larger, but still within the guidelines.

Those dimensions actually are quite nice-sized. Our regular luggage (from travel guy Rick Steves store) that we generally check is smaller than that (9" x 21" x 14").

Just pointing out that, expanded, some otherwise-regulation size carry on luggage then becomes too large to fit within the height+width+length restrictions.
