I don't mean for this to get to a political brouhaha, I'm just really confused. What's going on in Iran? Something about an election?
I go on twitter and I see everyone saying "green your profile for Iran" but I don't understand why?

I believe it has something to do with elections being fixed and protests.

I'm not entirely sure though. I just catch bits and pieces from the news.

Lets see if I can get this right,

They had the election for the president. Most everyone voted for this new guy, but when the polls came out, it showed that the old president was still going to be president. Everyone got mad, and started protesting for them to re-count.

I'm pretty sure that's how it all got started.

The President they had got re-elected. No one really liked this guy because he thought that the holocaust never happened and no homosexuals lived in his country.
Everyone thinks that the polls were rigged so protests are being held to try to get a recount.
And twitter is trying to help, I guess.

The previous president of the country Ahmedinejad was re-elected. The runner up, Mousavi, who wants a reform of Iran, believes that he was the rightful winner of the re-election...which I hope is true. Ahmedinejad and the supreme leader of Iran, Kohmenei/Kahmenei(I forgot which one it is now) are both very anti-western/anti-U.S. Ahmedinejad also is big on nuclear, which, supposedly he says is only used for power, but that is probably untrue. And now supporters of Mousavi are revolting. And yes..he did deny the holocaust ever happened.

So they have a President and a Supreme Leader?

Yeah, the Supreme Leader has the say over everything and is the most powerful person in Iran. The president is the next step down.

What the heck is the point of having a President then?

Thanks everyone.

Looking at the results from this election and the previous one, Ahmadinejad had 62% of the votes in 2005 and 63% of the votes, while the runner up had 36% in '05 and 34% in '09...Kinda makes you think that maybe those numbers are what the government decided to make the election out to be *IF* it actually was rigged.

What the heck is the point of having a President then?

Thanks everyone.

Its the same reason why the U.S. has a vice-president. You always have to have people below you if something happens to you.

I also think that the President makes most of the decisions but the Supreme Leader (that sounds so dictatorship-ish) decides if they decisions will are good or bad
