Can someone explain cancellation policies and new DVC insurance?

Hi,

I have 2 trips planned to WDW. April and August. I just found out my dad has colon cancer that spread to the liver and has probably a few months.

I think/hope my April trip will be OK....trying to get him to go.

Of course I borrowed these points. So I know that if I cancel more than 30 days with my April use year I will have to use them by April 2012.

What if I cancel within 30 days....what happens??
Something about holding??? What day is that to late?

What does the new DVC insurance cover?

First, let me say my heart goes out to your father, you & your family

If you cancel 31 days or more before check in borrowed & banked points must be used in new reservation by end of UY; current UY points can be used the same way or bank them by Nov. 30.

Canceling 30 days through 1 day before check in puts points into Holding which means all points whether current, banked or borrowed must be used in new reservation by end of UY but that reservation may only be booked 60 days or less before the new check in date you'd want.

Cancellation on check in day would cause all points to be lost.

I'm not really sure how DVC travel insurance works but I seem to remember something about getting reimbursed based on MF costs associated with points used in the reservation (?), I'm not 100% certain so this may not be the case. MS or member's site would have info.

Thanks so much for your kind words. He will see the oncologist Tues but the Dr's so far have not been positive.

Thanks....he won't go. He won't fly.....thought he would change his mind but it looks like he will be stubborn till the end.

He would be upset if we cancel......having the Pet scan tomorrow and meeting with Oncologist Tuesday. Should know more then......I should probably cancel my Aug trip and do a family cruise out of NY.

Just stinks....first time I actually get these free flights for opening SW card and I can't use them......Should be the worst of my problems I know

I am so sorry you have to go through this. Your Dad and family is in my prayers. My step mom just passed away in Nov. We had a trip planned for Nov. 4th - 10th. She wanted us to go, and said she would be upset if we didn't. I couldn't cancel without losing all my borrowed points because my use year was Dec. We didn't know what to do. She had ovarian cancer that was operated on in August, in October they found a new cancer in her colon, that's when they said in a few months. With much agony we decided to take the trip. We left on Nov 4th on Nov 8th was the last time I spoke with her, she went into a coma like sleep from all her meds. We returned on Nov.10th and she passed away on the 13th. Wait until you speak with the Dr on Tuesday and see what they are saying. Your April trip might be canceled. I am so sorry this is such a rough time for you and your family. Take care.

I was wondering too how the insurance works. I have a trip for August, but not so great health is happening again in my family.
I might not be able to even add the insurance at this point, is there a deadline after you book when to add the insurance?
