Can someone tell me about it? Basically, what is it and how do you get it. I tried looking for information on here but I have no clue where to find the basics.

Basically, Disney Vacation Club is a timeshare. Unlike some of the others, you buy points instead of set weeks.

The number of points you buy is up to you however there is a minimum thru Disney which I think is now 160. The Timeshare Store, which is a sponsor of this thread sells smaller and larger contracts. Check them out at the top of the thread.

Say you have 160 points and your Use Year or UY is December. Every Dec 1st, you will receive another 160 points. You do not pay for these points each Dec 1st. Once they are bought for the initial amount, other than the Maintenance Fees each month, or the exchange fee ($75 or $95) for reservations other than the DVC resorts, you're done.

Let's say you want to stay at SSR (Saratoga Springs Resort) from Sunday - Thursday during Adventure or "slow" season. Each night will cost you 11 points per for a total of 44 points. Deduct that from your 160 balance and you are left with 116 points.

Now, you decide not to do anything else during the current use year so you "bank" the 116 points to use for something next year. So, on Dec 1st of that year you will have 116 points from the ones you've banked plus another allotment of 160.

So now you have 276, the banked 116 and the new allotment of 160. You decide that you and DH will take a cruise. A category 11 on the 7 night Western will cost each you and DH 140 points during the Value Season. Well, that means you're 4 points short. No problem, just "borrow" them from your next year's allotment! Of course that means that come next Dec 1st you'll got 156 points put into your account.

You can use your points for over 500 destinations worldwide.

Hope I haven't muddied the waters too much for you. The flexability of the DVC is what makes it so awesome for my and DH's traveling needs.

If you have any more questions, just ask.

If any of my info is incorrect, please jump in and correct me anyone!

Sounds good other than...you have got to call and bank those points or you lose them.

Great information! Thanks so much! I do have a question about this part of what you said. How do you, as a DVC member, access these 500 worldwide destinations? How do you go about planning a trip to somewhere other then a Disney location?

That's what your 1 - 800 Member Services number is for. You just call and have your credit card ready as you will pay a small exchange fee ($75 or $95). They will check and see if the exchange is available and you're good to go.

DH and I use our points for cruising and we call Members Services, and they put us on hold while they contact the Disney Cruise Line on our behalf and check for vacancies. If there are vacancies, they hold it for us while they come back, make sure we want it, get our points withdrawn and our $75 exchange fee and we're set.

Member Services is great!

Awesome! That's what I needed to know. Thanks a bunch! :yay:

Ultra Cliff Notes Version:

-It's a form of timeshare
-ownership expresses as points rather than unit/week.
-you have a lease contract until either 2042, 2054, or 2057, depending on the resort
-points can be used as "currency" to make DVC reservations. Very Flexible
-you can make a reservation 11 months prior at your home DVC (resort the points are based from) and 7 months prior at any other DVC location
-Planning ahead is an essential element of DVC ownership. Reservations based on availability.
-a year's points allotment can be banked for use into the next year but planning is required. As the year go on, this become restricted and eventually not possible.
-maint fees are assessed per point owned and are due every year. These will increase as costs increase.
-DVC is an expensive timeshare compared to other options However it is significantly less expensive vs. paying for deluxe Disney hotel accomodations every year. Those that travel to WDW regularly are the most likely to benefit.

we've decided to buy new at AKL - the reason for new is we're Canadian and we have to do an exchange anyways plus most of the older ones (except SS) expire in 2042 as opposed to 2057 for AKL so i'm looking at the difference over 15 years as only being around $250 a year for the additional years.

for us it just makes better since since we have a young daughter who would take full advantage of the additional years (IF and only IF we couldn't use them anymore :lmao: :scared1: )
