Do you have a hand-held can opener that you love? In the past year, I have replaced mine three times because the gear/blade are rusting. I clean it after I use it every time. The last one I got was about $15 and made by Farberware. I just got off the phone with them and they said that it needs to be thoroughly dried after each use with Q-tips. She said that you have to get in between each of the notches of the gear as well as the rivet that holds the blade on. She said that it's under warranty and I could send it back but it would be at my cost. I told her that I'll just throw it away and buy a different brand.

Can anyone recommend a can opener that doesn't need to be dried with Q-tips after each use? I'm looking for a hand-held one, not electric. Thanks!

Lol! I'm in same boat! I've had the same hand held can opener for 18 years and it needed to be replaced. I've tried several different ones and they've all been so bad, they hardly open the can. Plus, I've noticed they've rusted as well. Hm, cleaning in between with q-tips? Not gonna happen :rotfl:

daughersrus, I hope you don't mind me jumping on your thread, I'm looking for a great recommendation too! :)

I really like the non-bladed can openers. I have a Farberware, got it at Walmart. It's called a safety can-opener. It lifts the lid, no sharp edges.

Edit to add: there's very little, if any, cleanup afterwards. It doesn't come in contact with the product inside the can.

I love my pampered chef can opener. My MIL loves hers too!

I have had a Swing-Away can opener for over 20 years. It has a little rust on it and we certainly don't clean it after every use. Works better than anything else I have tried. I grew up using the same kind and never had issues with that either and that is probably over 40 years old now (my sister has the one we had).

IKEA.

DH and I were having issues, too, finding one we liked. I was at IKEA with a friend and saw one for $5.99 so I grabbed it to try. Came home, we LOVED it. DH was so excited with it he threw all the others out. :rotfl:

We were back at IKEA a few months ago and DH got 2 more "just in case". :)

(I just noticed on their website that they have 2-- we have this one http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00081534)

I agree about the safety can openers. I bought it after I sliced my finger on a can lid I had just opened with a regular can opener! I got mine at Walmart....it says Chefmate on the handle.

Can't you just spray it with PB blaster or WD40? I would think that would stop the rust. We have an electric that is temperamental and the cheapy, hand one that I've had for probably 15 years (I think Ecko). It's a bit rusty (gear) but it works better than the electric.

I have one from Pampered Chef. I won't go so far to say I love it--sometimes it's a pain to use. It is the type that cuts the can on the outer edge so there are not sharp edges. But the darn thing has never even come close to looking like it will rust and I've had it about 10 years now.

Pampered Chef just changed their can opener. Its a little bit different than the old one but i really like it.. It comes out in the September catalog. I got to play with it at my change-over meeting last week!

So funny to find someone else has the same issue -- can openers drive me nuts! I usually get the cheap-os because they keep conking out on me, but maybe that's what's creating my vicious circle of can openers. Glad you asked, OP!

LEIFHEIT brand...made in West Germany. It's sold in lots of retail stores in the USA. Have had mine close to 20 years and it opens those huge cans (like schools use) with little effort. One thing I always do with it after each use is allow it to air dry on a clean dish cloth on the counter with blade side up. Cuts down on bacteria building up in the nooks and crannies as well as helping to avoid rust.

Is there a can opener (even one mentioned here) that is easy to use as far as the turning/cranking...hope you know what I mean. Seems like in the past year my hands really hurt trying to turn these things..mid fifties so I count my blessings I don't really have anything else wrong besides sometimes back pain (old injury) but these can openers are really tough..maybe should consider electric? Glad you asked OP

Yep...the Leifheit is. I have an OXO that leaves a smoothe edge but can hardly manage it due to the difficulty in cranking it. In fact, to use it you must stand with knees bent and legs spaced wide apart and *brace yourself*! It really gives your upper arms a work out just to open a small can of peas. :sad2:
