I moved last weekend (during the pouring rain that never turned into a hurricane). I hate the new house, the kids hate the new house.

FIrst the house was dirty, dirty, dirty. No matter how much cleaning I have done it still just doesn't seem clean to me, although at this point it is "clean enough".

The previous occupant was a smoker. House didn't smell like smoke the few times I was in the house before the move. For one whole week before I moved in (and was cleaning) I left every single window open. Well, now 2 weeks later the entire house smells like stale smoke:sad1:

The stairs are waaay steep, there aren't a lot of electrical outlets, my dishwasher, washer and dryer aren't connected yet, the stairs are too narrow (in addition to steep) to get my boxspring up the stairs. I'll have to cut it in half, but I can't find my jigsaw:mad:

On a postitive note, possibly, the kids love their schools. We live in the same district and only moved a few blocks away. Oh yeah, I thought my old neigborhors were loud, rude, etc. Well, these ones aren't any better.

Oh, and I think my dd13 and I are allegric to the house. We have both been sick for a week:mad::guilty:

Ok, now I'm headed to sleep on the couch because I don't like my bedroom

Can you paint the walls. A fresh coat of paint could livin up the place, make it look cleaner and take away the smoke smell. If there are carpets, you may need to replace them.

Yikes! Did you do a walk through previously? Is this a rental or a purchase? I'm just wondering if this should've been done before you moved in.

I'm so sorry you don't like the house, it's supposed to be the one place you feel the most comfortable. That's one third of the picture because the kids liking the school and good neighbors are the other 2 thirds!!

Hang in there and concentrate on the GOOD! :thumbsup2

Can you paint? That would help it feel cleaner and maybe contain some of the smoke smell.

Why did you choose the place? It doesn't seem to fit your needs at all.

I'm sorry you don't like your house. I hope you can settle in soon. Yeah, I think I'd have to paint everything with Kilz and start over. Pull out the drapes and the carpeting. It is very possible that your DD is allergic to the smoke.

Oh sweetie, I am sorry you are not happy in your new abode. Like others have said can you paint the walls and have the carpets professionally cleaned. AND if your budget allows how about a professional cleaning service come in for a day and give it that white glove treatment. :thumbsup2

I am surprised coming in front the outside you did not notice the cigarette smell esp if you are NOT a smoker, non-smokers tend to be real aware of that smell.

Get some new drapes and blinds as well.

Good luck.

 That is a lot happening at the same time.

I would paint ASAP and bleach things in the meantime. I am thinking of the possible allergy to smoke as well.

When we are tired things seem so much worse. Perhaps once you all have relaxed, rested, and such they will improve. :flower3:

I wanted to stay in the same school district for my kids, so this was the best we could find. If I didn't have kids I think I would look for something else. I'm renting from the owner until we can close-it's a short sale, which is taking forever.

I did take down every single curtain and blind. I've also washed the living room walls, all the windows and painted the kitchen. Honestly I'm exhausted. Oh, I also steam cleaned my bedroom, ran out of time, but plan on doing the kids rooms this weekend. The kitchen and living room and downstairs bathroom all smell the worst. There is no carpet downstairs, hardwood floors, which I've cleaned repeatedly and then put down an area rug.

I think I just need to adjust. I lived in my previous house for 8 years and this one is just different. Definitely bigger, but configured differently.

Smoke is really awful. You could have a carpet co come in and run an ozone machine, which can run a little bit depending on the co. You would not be able to stay there while it runs, but the machine does a good job. Sorry about the house, hope it works out for you. Jo

You have probably been working like a dog the past few weeks....stress can really breakdown your immune system.

Can you afford to have a cleaning lady come once every other week for a while? I feel so relaxed when mine comes over because all the stress of cleaning is completely gone.

Try to rest & relax for a while. Don't try to do too much at once.

Good luck!

I'm sorry that your new house isn't what you had hoped for.. Maybe after you have time to adjust, it will seem better..

When DD and her family bought the house they are in now, it was filthy.. The previous owner was a disabled man and smoked 24/7 for years in that house.. (Other family members were heavy smokers as well..) I tried cleaning the house while DD was packing up the old house and after days and days, I realized it was hopeless.. I hired (and paid for) a professional cleaning service to come in after all of the carpeting was ripped up and tossed out and all window coverings were removed.. They did a fantastic job!! They cleaned every inch of that house and when they were done, it smelled like a brand new home.. There's a special product they use to get rid of smoke odors (it's a dry product, not wet) and it works like a charm.. (It's also used in homes where there have been fires and there's lots of smoke damage..)

It wasn't cheap - but it wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be either - considering the size of the house.. It's something you might want to consider if you can afford it.. It would also eliminate any issues with dust; mold; pet dander; etc..

Good luck - and I hope that once you adjust to your new surroundings, you will come to love your new home..:goodvibes

So sorry that you are unhappy. No doubt the move, weather, stress and all that goes with it have been playing a big part in the situation.

Any money in the budget for a cleaning crew to come in, something like Service-pro? They do cleaning for things like furnace puff-backs and such. They do a great job, from my experience. Everything is cleaned, ceiling, walls, floors, cabinets, everything.

If no money, what about using candles or air-fresheners just until you can get to each room and give it a do-over?

:hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug::hug:

Really sorry things aren't going as you had hoped.

:grouphug: sorry to hear this :grouphug:
The kids Like school :thumbsup2 well thats good....maybe that stuff that "absorbs" odors will work???Or some type natural absorber...Personally I have left hotel rooms that said non smoking room but I swear I smelled it...I just cannot take that odor and am very sensitive to it....but moving in is a big step so, there Must be something that will work and make you happier :confused3 about the situation.....Go room to room and place one thing you "LOVE" soon it will feel "all yours" I want to wish you the best of luck........Maybe you are just exhausted from all the upheaval and a new day will dawn "better" :confused3 Again, good luck!

I agree that the only thing that is probably going to really do it is a professional fire-recovery cleaning, but in the meantime here is one thing that may help a bit: scrape the inside of the window glass with a blade. Nicotine particles cling to glass, and then when the windows heat up with the sun the odor is released. Nicotine film won't wash off, it has to be scraped.

Re-paint the ceilings too. Remember smoke rises.

I'm so sorry you are unhappy with your house. We just moved too and it is taking me a long time to get adjusted. Just doesn't feel like "home" to me. I also recommend getting Kilz and repainting everything, even though that sounds exhausting right now! I hope we both feel better soon!!
