Can I use "flight mode" during take-off on Ipod?

I have downloaded the fear of flying app to my Ipod touch, I have soothing music too, and my Kindle is filled with funny short stories that do not require concentration. All this is supposed to help me stay calm during my upcoming flight, and I especially need this for take-off, as take-off is when I start sweating and shaking and pulling up the armrest and praying out loud (or so I have been told, I myself am too caught up in the moment to really know what the heck I am doing!).

Then it hit me, I can't use any of this during take-off (especially needing the fear of flying app!), because we can't use electronics!!!

My Ipod does have an airplane mode, can I use this during take-off in airplane mode? Should I ask the flight attendants if I can use my Ipod?

I won't take drugs, as I tried that and I get too worked up for them to take effect until I land (at which time I am ready to fall asleep!), and drinking before hand won't work for the same reason. I was hoping that app would be my ticket to a calmer flight! :sad1:

All electronic devices have to be turned off during take off and landing. Have a book with you for those times that you cannot use your Ipod.

Are you flying Jet Blue by chance? There have been flights with them where the TV's were on and we were able to watch tv while taking off and landing.

Good luck and try not to worry to much, you will be on your way to Disney :) focus on that...

Last time I flew they were very specific that airplane mode was not allowed, so that's a no.

Wonderful. So how on earth do the people that make these apps for fear of flying expect you to listen to the takeoff portion when you can't even have the app playing? Grrrr.

Guess I am going to have to memorize that part. No time to order a book to read to talk me thru it!

And nope, not Jetblue, but Southwest. Jetblue doesn't have flights to Orlando from my area. Sounds like an interesting airline, though!

They claim it can interfere with the plane's electronics. I'm not sure why it doesn't do that above 10,000 feet. :confused3

Just close your eyes and think of something peaceful.

Never had a problem personally. Airplane mode is ally just to save battery life so your device isn't constantly searching for a connection of sorts.

SW always says to turn off (like OFF off) all electronic devices during take-off and landing, until 35,000 feet is reached (I think that's the right altitude?). So, I always bring a couple of magazines to read during that time, but you better believe that I immediately pull out my ipod once I hear that little "ding" :rotfl:!

OP, you'll be just fine. I always bring a few 'comfort' items to help me during the flight:

1- I get a bottle of water after security, and pack some familiar snacks like larabars, cut up fruit and veggies, and gluten-free cookies as a treat.
2- I LOAD up my ipod with podcasts (like the DisUnplugged, WDW Today, Disney Dish (Len's podcast), Jillian Michael's) and music that I like to listen to (Dave Matthew's Band, random stuff from the 90's, various hippiedippie relaxation music, etc.).
3- I always bring my laptop and watch movies or TV shows on it (on DVD). The Golden Girls ALWAYS comes with me, as do one of the PotC movies, Nemo or Wall-E, and some stand-up like Russell Brand.
4- I always stock up on 2-3 magazines to bring to read during take-off and landing. Things I don't normally get to read like Real Simple, Good Housekeeping, random fashion magazines, etc.
5- I always bring my neck pillow- if I can sleep on the plane, it makes the ride so much shorter! In fact, I have heard that it's easier to fall asleep during take-off because of the reclining position you're automatically put in. I haven't tried that yet.
6- When all else fails, I bug DH because he's the calmest flyer I know. :goodvibes

ALSO, I have come across some AWESOME travel podcasts on itunes that are made by flight attendants. They're so funny, and very honest- check them out! One off the top of my head is affiliated with upgrd.com.

Hope that helps a little!

Any way to turn the music/commentary into a CD and grab a portable "diskman"?

Or are those verboten too? I'm not sure....they don't broadcast anything (or attempt to find wireless connections)....and you can get them for under $20.

Not allowed. They always say that anything with an on/off switch must be switched to off

I can't recall if SW has any sort of plug in channels to listen to, but on airlines that offer it, I usually plug into the arm rest and listen to what they have to offer. I then switch over to my iPod once I am allowed.

All electronics with an on/off switch have to be off from the time the door closes until you at 10,000 feet. It is usually 10 minutes or so into the air.

I do love United with their cockpit to ground communications! I can listen to the discussions the pilots are having with the tower!

Hello
All electronics have to be in off mode for the "critical" phases of flight....taxi, takeoff and landing. At 10,000ft you can turn them back on (around the 10 min mark)
My suggestions would be, take ear plugs (unfamiliar but normal operating sounds can be disconcerting to some nervous flyers for example flaps moving or gear being lowered), something to distract you (Ive found a lot of nervous flyers knit, cross stitch...soemthing that you have to concentrate on fully) Tell your crew that you have a fear of flying, I always find it helpful to know that information, I can check on you frequently and give you information on the flight (for example we are about to start descent and the noises associated with it etc etc) Also some people find it helpful to meet the pilots and a lot of pilots will take the time to chat with you about the flight, weather, expected turbulence etc. It takes away the "unknown" factor and maybe makes you feel a little more in control of the circumstances. If you can try and get seats as far forward in the cabin as possible, turbulance is felt less the closer to the nose of the plane.
Good luck, you can do this :goodvibes

Really sounds like you need to Drive. Not sure where you live, but for me, any vacation that is less than 20 hours away I drive. People say Driving is stressful with 2 young children, and it may be, but no as stressful as 10 minutes in a shaky plane!

Planes are much safer than cars. I personally would not drive more than 5 hours, let alone 20.

Flying somewhere just because its more than 5 hours away is ridiculous at least for most. The cost just doesn't justify much less the time you have to spend in the airport before the plane takes off, picking up baggage, etc.

Statistics are funny things, yes, less people percentage wise get killed in airplane accidents, but I still feel much more safe in personal control of my vehicle, on the ground, than being put in an airplane that I have no control over how it was inspected or who is piloting it. Those are real concerns for a lot of people, regardless what the "stats" might say.

I will fly, only if its financially smart to do so. I figure in how much if any extra time it will take (if i have to take more vacation days), gas money, airport parking, baggage fees, etc. No matter how far the distance, for me, Driving is much less stressful and I feel safer since I have more control (not total control obviously since you can't control other drivers) over my safety in a car than I do an airplane.

For me, I get tired when I drive more than 3 or 4 hours at a time. I think it's more stressful having semi's flying past you, other drivers cutting in and out of traffic. Florida is about 18 hours by car for me, there's just no way. I'd rather sit back and relax.

And most airlines say you cannot have earphones in during take-off or landing.

I have flown Delta, United, AirTran and JetBlue in the past year and have never been told no headphones for take-off or landing. JetBlue and United both had in flight TV's and were up and running. They do cut in for any announcements from the FA's or pilots, but we have never heard them say no headphones.

See, everyones different. I have no problems or stress driving, actually look forward for long driving trips, but there is NO relaxing on an airplane. I flew to Chile one time, 12 hour flight, and I was wide awake and clinching the seat the entire time. I suggested the OP drive because she sounds like me.

Same experience. I will say that sometimes I get the side-eye from the flight attendant, but I make sure that the plug end is visible as not plugged into any device.
