Can I use a small microwave in our room?

We are staying at ASMovies in May and I'm thinking about bringing a small microwave for a few cheap meals in the room. I've been reading but haven't seen any mention of anyone using microwaves. Just wondering if there's rules against them or anything.

Technically, no - you can't.. They're considered a fire hazard - among other things.. Sorry..

With the exception of the Family Suites, none of the Value rooms are designed for using a microwave and making meals in the rooms. Its simply not safe to be cooking in a hotel room without a kitchen/kitchenette.

You can rent a small fridge for $10 a day.. Would that help at all? At least you could have cereal and milk; maybe some cold cuts; yogurt; etc.. They're about the size of a dorm fridge..

I know this does not help, but this thread has me thinking. I have had more problems with hair dryers having shorts and never a problem with my microwave. I am suprised they let us have hair dryers. Microwaves are a lot safer.

So what rooms have microwaves in WDW?

Only those with kitchens or kitchenettes - DVC villas, the All Stars Family Suites and the Fort Wilderness Cabins.

Why don't you rent a condo? There is a thread for Bonnet Creek which is as close to Disney property as you'll get. I bet you could get a good price there and be able to cook your own meals. Bringing a microwave on vacation seems like a lot of work.

I am not starting an argument here but a year or so ago, someone on the boards posted an email that they had sent to Disney and the response they had received and it said you may bring them if you do not leave them unattended while using them. Does anyone remember that? I can't rememeber who it was.....maybe someone else remembers.

I'm not looking for an argument either but I've been in plenty of motel rooms that have smaller microwaves on a regular counter or sometimes on top of a small refrigerator.............not in a 'kitchen'. My point? I don't think that it really is a matter of it being unsafe. I'd just pick up the phone and ask them myself rather than start relying on what other people will tell you. Always best to get things straight from the horses' mouth

As much as I hate to say this, because I can't stand smelling food wafting into my room, when this came up a couple years ago, I wanted to prove that Disney did not allow appliances. I personally think people should rent with a full kitchen and a fan and a sink to wash dishes with, if they want to cook, especially since the curtains and bedspread hold the smell for the next guest and are not washed. But that said, unless things have changed, it is what it is. I don't like it, and I think it borders on rude to cook smelly foods in what is essentially a bedroom, but I don't own the place.

Without looking inside those motels' walls, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if the wiring supported the additional power needed by a microwave oven.

I did mail Disney recently to ask this and got the answer that its an absolute no.
The danger starting a fire was to big.

From another threat I got a few answers you might consider good advice.

If the toaster shorts out and causes a fire, make sure to have your running shoes on, and don't stop at the security gate, either...

...get a lawyer, since once the Fire Inspector determines the cause you would be charged and even worse if someone would loose their life..you might be charged with felony criminal charges too.

When we stayed at AKL a couple weeks ago, I was SO surprised that there wasn't a microwave in our room. I brought all sorts of food to heat up. I thought maybe it was just missing from OUR room.

A friend of mine went to WDW and stayed at POR last month. Before she left, she read through all the FAQs on the Disney website and said that the "Disney Moms" panel said it was perfectly fine to bring a microwave and even suggested it. As far as I know, she took one with no problems.

I am probably going to regret posting this, but here it goes!

I have always understood that open appliances like toasters, griddles, hot plates, etc are not allowed. We never take any of those.

However, I have used a MW in my room almost every trip I have made to WDW, as well as any other hotel I have stayed at.

We have a small MW for just that purpose. We make sure we use a surge protector strip to plug it in.

I have NEVER once been told by any hotel that it is not permitted.

We spent 2 weeks @ WDW last Sep and the MW was sitting on the table in our room the entire time.

I was never even spoken to about it.

Mousekeeping was in our room every day; not once did anyone say the MW was not allowed.

So, until WDW tells me it is a fire hazard and not allowed, I will continue to use it.

I don't see it being more of a FH than a curling iron or hair dryer. AAMOF, I would venture to guess that those are a bigger FH than a MW!

Even if it wasn't aganist Disney rules. There is no way I would want to take a microwave with me. What a hassle.

We drive to WDW, and we have a very small MW, Not a hassle at all.
It is actually quite convenient to be able to heat things up in the room.

We take along Cinammon rolls and love to warm them up. MW popcorn for a late snack, hot choc in the colder months, and even easy to MW meals when we aren't on the DDP.

I think the convenience outweighs the hassle of taking it (which we don't see it as a hassle; just one of the things we throw in the car)
