Is it acceptable by the airlines to use a hard-sided cooler(probably 12 pack size)as check-in luggage? I'm thinking my DS would like to take some Coke and bottled water on a short trip, but since he's taking ME, won't have a chance for a grocery stop.

If so, what should I use to keep it closed? Just duct tape or something like that? What if the cooler is searched? Will they retape it shut for travel?

Each airline is different. I've seen paper boxes with duct as luggage! BUT I would call them directly for info, just in case. You might want to consider: Premailing this in a box to yourself, to your resort? Or do a netgrocery? If it doesn't work out?

Good luck, MKy princess:

I don't know that I would use a hard sided cooler. They get banged around quite a bit. You would also need to be there when they inspected the cooler and then you could secure it with duct tape.

it is ok to check in a hard sided cooler at any airline. we have been doing this for 15 years. never used duct tape. just packed like a few clothing items inside if i needed the space. otherwise i left it empty. never a problem.

Make sure you don't include any regular ice or dry ice - neither of these will be allowed (actually, dry ice may be allowed, but you'll be requried to pay a rediculous amount of money as it's considered a hazerdous substance).

The only ice allowed is teh blue ice (fully contained things that you freeze, like for a camping trip).

I also think it's a great idea to call your airline and get their specifics on what they allow or not.

Good luck!!

Do you want to check it thru packed with soda cans already in it? If so, I'd be really wary about opening those cans up for a really long time, as much as they'd get banged around in handling....There's also a good chance they'd explode in transit (change in pressure) which could results in a pretty big mess in the cooler!
If I'm understanding your situation correctly, how about packing a foldable soft sided cooler in your luggage and stick in a few empty zip lock bags you can fill with ice when you get to the resort. Then buy the drinks at your resort gift shop. Yeah, more expensive but maybe a lot less hassle.
