You understand correctly.

Correct....NEVER.

If you could, then what would be the advantage of a home resort?

That's why you should purchase where you really want to stay, especially if you go during peak DVC times such as Spring Break, Oct/Nov (Epcot Food and Wine Festival and Thanksgiving), and the first two weeks of December (low points and holiday happenings) when you may need the 11-month window to get the room type you're looking for.

got it.....

so if wanted the best chance of getting a first twos weeks in Dec reservation.... i should try and buy a week at a resort that has a january date?

not a nov date right?

No. You can buy in at whatever use year you want. You just have to make the ressie at 11 months out. So for early December, you'd call in early January for your home resort.

And if you usually vacation in December, a November use year would be good.

Use year is almost meaningless. Its only benefit is when canceling. Use year has nothing at all to do with making reservations.

I use my eleven month window to reserve December. Tradegy strikes, I have to cancel the reservation. if my use year is in November, I now have untill next Nov 30 to use the points. I am well within any banking windows, life is great.

I use my eleven month window to reserve December. Tradegy strikes, I have to cancel the reservation. if my use year is in January, I am way passed any banking window and I have to use the points by Jan 31.

The best use year is slightly before your usual vacation time. But vacation habits change, we really very rarely cancel a vacation, use year is pretty much a non-issue....its nice to have one slightly before your usual vacation time, but its certainly not a deal breaker.

still a little confuse....

as long as I own some time in a home resort... I can book 11 months in advance (no matter the date) as long as i have the points?

i.e. i have a june use week..... i had points banked from last year... so i can make a dec reservation in Jan... right?

also i can only use point from that resort to book eleven months in advance.

i.e i want to book a 120 point week... I only have 100 from that home resort ... i could not use 20 points of a non-home resort to book this reservation correct..? (eleven months in advance)

thanks for the help

As long as your banked points will still be viable on the vacation date, yes.

No, those 20 points from a different home resort can not be used until the seven month window opens up.

I guess the easiest explanation is this....

The only thing that matter when making reservations is the 7-11 windows.

Now your points must be viable on the vacation dates. Banked June '02 points, current June '03 points and borrowed June '04 points are all viable for a December vacation. All banking and borrowing must be done when the reservation is made. When the reservation is made, the points are "in use" and unavailable for other reservations.

Booking using points at a non-home resort must wait until the 7-month window. However, depending on the availability, you may be able to book a cash night through MS for any DVC resort prior to the seven month window.

Should I make life more confusing....

If you really want to make reservations more than 7 months out at a resort not your home, you can try to "trade" points with another member.

Lets say I really want a family reunion at OKW with the big grand villa and the low point structure. But my home resort is BWV.

I might be able to find someone whose home resort is OKW who really wants to book BWV at a hard to book time (like the Food and Wine Fest or the first two weeks in December). So we trade points.

Make yourself a chart. We'll use June since you mentioned it.

Suppose you have a June use year. This means every June 1st you receive a new allocation of points to use during the next 12 months. A June use year chart would look like this:

Use Year......Vacation Dates
2002.....June 1, 2002 thru May 31, 2003
2003.....June 1, 2003 thru May 31, 2004
2004.....June 1, 2004 thru May 31, 2005
2005.....June 1, 2005 thru May 31, 2006

etc.

Suppose you wanted to take a vacation with a checkout date of Dec 15, 2004. This vacation is in your 2004 use year (6-1-04 thru 5-31-05), therefore it would require 2004 points. You can have points in 2004 three different ways. 1) The regular 6-1-04 allocation of points. 2) Bank points from 2003, 3)Borrow points from 2005.

At your HOME Resort you can reserve 11 months ahead. So for a 12/15/04 checkout date, you can reserve your accommodation on Jan 15, 2004 (11-months out). It makes absolutely NO difference how many points you have on Jan 15 when you call. It only matters how many points WILL be available in December. So in January, 2003 you're still in your 2003 use year. Maybe you've used all your points or maybe you have some still available you want to use. Let's say your contract is 200 points. Let's also say you have 50 points (2003) still available you want to use for that Dec '04 vacation. Let's say that vacation requires 220 points.

You call in January '04. You tell the CM your Dec 04 dates. She looks at the computer and sees you will only have 200 points available for that date (From your upcoming June 1, 2004 allocation of points). To complete the reservation you do one of two things. Either 1)bank the 50 2003 points you have into 2004. This gives you 250 points available for your vacation. The CM will use 220, leaving you with 30 2004 vacation points still available for your use through 5/31/05. Or, Borrow 20 points from your 2005 use year. This will give you 220 points to make your Dec 2004 reservation. If you do that, you still have the 50 2003 points to use sometime prior to 5/31/04, or you can bank them at a later date (subject to banking deadlines). If you do borrow, then remember that when June 1, 2005 comes around, you will only receive 180 points instead of the 200 allotment because you borrowed 20 of those points.

Hope this helps.

If you purchase a different use year than June, just make a similar chart. See what year your vacation dates fall in, then make sure you have points in that year. The reservation dates do not change. Jan is still 11-months from a Dec vacation no matter what use year you have. The only difference is what year the points come from.

Example You want to take a vacation in August 2004.

You have a June use year, so those points would come from your 2004 use year points (Jun 1, 2004 thru May 31, 2005)

Or, you have a Dec use year, so those points would come from your 2003 use year points (Dec 1, 2003 thru Nov 30, 2004)

Boy this is the most confusing thread I have ever read, I'm glad I know how it works, but Greggville probably has a gun to head by now. He certainly has got to be sorry he asked.
