I just had to find a place to post how wonderful it is to see DS hit a milestone and come thru with flying colors! DS is 19, and has Aspergers, CP and a multitude of other contributing delays. I have homeschooled him since the public school system became a nightmare in 8th grade. long story short I enrolled him in community college and tonight he had his first and only class of the semester that is actually held at the college, from here out they are distance learning. the class was held late, 6-9pm which did not bode well for his ability to focus, and he was really worried about being able to speak up if he needed help. I waited just down the hall and did not intrude at all, I let him handle it all himself and he was great! he did not talk to the other students waiting before class in the hall, but when I moved closer to the door I did hear him ask the teacher to repeat an instruction. after class when he did not appear, I peeked in to find him waiting to talk to the teacher and he asked her a very good question. He talked non-stop all the way home about how great it was and said he thinks he could handle a class next semester! I know this is not a big deal for those with NT kids, but he is my only child and I have waited for this day a long time. Ok, just had to brag a little, I could not be a happier Mommy today:woohoo:

You have good reason to brag on your son's accomplishment. Every parent wants to see their child succeed. I hope this is the beginning of many more proud moments for you & your son.

One of the great things about being a parent of an exceptional child is that we have the opportunity to really savor these moments.

Congratulation to you and your son

That is really great! I hope he keeps having successes like that!

YAY!!! Brag away, proud Momma! How awesome for him, I bet he feels great about himself. :)

And...Amen!!

:thumbsup2:cheer2: Give yourself a great big pat on the back too because he probably wouldn't have come this far if you hadn't made the decision to home school him when you did:teacher:

Wow! Your family and ours have so much in common! I started homeschooling my Aspie daughter in 7th grade when things became unmanageable in public school. She's 17 now. She just 'graduated' homeschool and is thriving at the community college. :woohoo: I totally understand your excitement!

I think the community college environment is much more accepting than public middle/high school.

Congratulations to both of you!! :goodvibes

Op your post made me cry . I have 3 special needs children and others do not realize how hard they have to work to accomplish these things. Good job for your son and thank you for letting us share your joy.:woohoo:

Thank you all for the well wishes. He has started his "distance" learning and is working very hard and taking his classes seriously. other good news we received is that he tested so high on the english and reading placement tests that we can pay the fee for the class and he will get the credits for them without attending. Even I had no idea his skills in these subjects were so high. DS looks younger than his 19 years and the other day someone asked him what grade he was in and he replied proudly "actually, I am a college student!" No eye contact but it was amazing he spoke to a stranger! have we hit a point where he is suddenly reaching new milestones? I feel like I want to start backing off more and really pushing the independence. I have been trying to get him to interact with salespeople, and buy his own things at the store, but he gets so flustered and just keeps pushing the money at the cashier and then gets embarassed. I sent him into 7-11 to try to get a slurpee on his own and he came out almost in tears after 30 seconds. but then other times, like at the college, he seemed so independent. Sigh.... it really is a never ending process.

I'll second that "Amen"! Congrats! You should be so proud of him and rightly so. Keep up the good work for his higher education. Best of luck!
Elizabeth
