Can I do this?

My husband and I are planning a trip for Jun 27-July 5, 2015. We will be purchasing DVC this year to use for the first time on the trip, and for several years after. Our plan is to eventually stay at every resort at least once. We will be purchasing at SSR (most likely). What I want to know is this: Can I book at the 11 month window at SSR, then change at the 7 month window to another resort, if they have availability? For the initial booking, we will be borrowing points from the following year. Thanks in advance!

Yes, you can change your reservation at the 7 month mark. Many people do nearly every time!

Yes you can. Just be aware that if you typically travel over holidays, that non-home resort is going to be much more difficult get at the 7 month window.

And also be aware that if your new reservation takes fewer points that any borrowed points remain in the use year to which they were borrowed. Borrowing is a final transaction.

Yes, as long as the # of points are the same or greater. You wouldn't want to leave points on the table.

So, don't go from a 1 BR at SSR to a studio elsewhere. Regarding studios, there are few places that have lower points than a SSR studio - perhaps one at OKW or a standard/value view at AKV.

Welcome Home! :)

Just be carful borrowing right away at 11 months. Be sure not to borrow more then the max cost of your dream trip.

EXAMPLE:

11 month book 300 point stay at SSR. 150 points are borrowed.

7 months you switch to 138 points at AK. So after the trip you bank 2014's-150 and YOU WILL LOOSE 12 borrowed POINTS.

You would be able to bank the current years 150. But since you borrowed more then you ended up using you will loose those points.

So for me I always figure the cost of the trip I want to switch to (138) and then I make sure I never borrow past that number at the 11 month mark.

Also in future years you really have to watch out for this. If you borrowed points from a future year the amount you can bank next year goes down.

EXAMPLE:

Points left
2014 - 150 (banked in MUST BE USED IN 2015 USE YEAR)
2015 - 0 (borrowed)
2016 - 150

Because you used so many 2015 borrowed points in 2014, No matter what you do in 2015 you must use those 2014 points or loose them.

I hope all that made sense. Point I'm just trying to make is WATCH OUT borrowing. I find its ALWAYS better to bank then borrow to get points needed.

I think that using SSR points to experience the DVC system is a smart move. You will quickly learn about the ins and outs, pluses and minuses of the DVC program.

It will also, for the least amount of money enable you to stay at all of the DVC resorts while deciding where you want to call home in the future.

With only a very few exceptions (like the week between Christmas & New Year's Day), SSR will still have quite a bit of availability left when the 7 month window opens.

If you want to stay at a non-home resort, just wait until 7 months to make your reservation. That way, you won't have to cancel a reservation - that process can take a precious few sections and allow another member to get what you want. (Plus there will be no worries about ending up with "stranded" points because what you want takes less than what you reserved). If you can't get what you want at 7 months, then make your SSR reservation.

FWIW, I think you will have several choices at 7 months for your summer 2015 vacation, even though it includes the 4th of July Holiday.

Good luck!

Thank you for the good advice everyone. I was a little worried about being shut out from all the DVCs at the 7-month mark, but I think it's in my best interests to wait until then because of the point borrowing situation.

Can't wait for my trip!!!! :yay:

For both 2013 and 2014, you could have gotten BLT lake view, BWV pool/garden view, VWL, OKW, SSR and AKV standard or savanna view at 7 months out for the period you want. With SSR points, I would avoid doing the reservation at 11 months out with intent to try to switch at 7 if it requires borrowing points.
