I don't see why not but I figured I'd check with you guys. I have a 20% off pincode and the CM said I could use it in August, so I am booked for POR from 8/23-9/1. Since the latest speculation has free dining starting 8/25, would we be able to book 8/23-8/25 with 20% pincode and 2 day park tickets and then start our free dining 8/25-9/1? I don't see why not, do you?

That's very similar to what we did in May/June, 2011. There was a % room only special that we booked our first two nights with before free dining started. We didn't, however, purchase any tickets for those two days but rather chose to spend our time at the resort, shopping offsite and then at DTD. We stayed at the same resort (the CBR) and, after those first two nights, we checked out of our room only reservation and checked in for our free dining package. I had made a request in advance that we be able to stay in the same room and then made the request again when we checked in for our room only reservation. The request was granted and we were off to the parks and our ADRs made under the free dining promo.

If you buy tickets with the first reservation, you still have to buy tickets with the second reservation.

So... don't buy tickets on the first part of the trip! See if you can just pick your Free Dining park tickets early.

You want to book the tickets for your entire length of stay, then you can pick up your tickets up to three days early at guest relations at the park, or DTD.

There is an entire sticky regarding tickets on the Theme Parks and Strategies board.

For my last three trips, the discount has been blacked out the first day. I purchase tickets with my package, starting the second day. You go to guest relations, pick up your tickets, and then when you check in for your package, have the concierge desk place the paper tickets on your KTTW card you obtained from the front desk. The front desk cannot transfer tickets, only the concierge desk can.

In order to get free dining you must purchase at least a 2 day park ticket with that reservation. Why would you not do free dining the entire trip? If you are going to do a stay with two different discounts, try to do the free dining the first part since you need to purchase tickets with that and not the %off reservation.

Oh, gotcha. In that case, you would need to get at least 2 day tickets with the free dining portion. I believe you can pick up those tickets a few days in advance. So, I would hold off on getting park tickets and add them to the free dining portion (get the # of days you want for the entire trip) and then pick them up early.
