She made COLOR GUARD! :woohoo::banana::woohoo:

We're SO thrilled. My middle daughter was in guard for 3 years, and was a guard capt for 2 of them!! We LOVE band, all the talented kids, working hard, the amazing shows, colors, creativity...love it! :cheer2:Miss Abby my 8th grader is moving to my ex's house :sad1: for highschool. That was our agreement, MUCH better schools there. SO I called up the highschool and asked how can we get her there for a tryout, since she lives 3 hours away. The director said we could email a video of her...and well, I heard from him today and he said, "Girl, she's PERFECT for us! She's a natural!" :cool1: I was SOOOO exicted!! I called the middle daughter up, Miss Amanda and asked her if SHE would be the one to tell Abby. She'll be calling us later tonight. Abby will be on :cloud9:

Now...if I can attempt to go home and act like I know NOTHING! :rolleyes1

Okay, I just HAD to tell someone, so now I feel better. Thanks for letting this mom brag!

Congrats!

But I have to ask. Why do the colors need to be guarded? :confused3 and who do they need to be guarded from?:confused3

:idea:

Or do they have to be guarded from each other?!?!? Like Red has a grudge against Green and the other colors all picked sides and the guards keepm them from rumbling? :confused:

Congratulations!

The term color guard comes from the old days when they used rifles and sabers to guard the American Flag.

I think...Hmmm

Not too sure though....I'm not up on all this band stuff! :lmao:

Who are you kidding? You're the head band geek around here!

So if they don't guard the American flag anymore, what DO they guard? Is the world of band geeks that competitive that they need guards?:confused3

Congrats to Abby!

I love me some wikipedia:
History

Since early history, flags and banners have been used by many armies in battle. They served several purposes: to identify units, for signalling and to be a common point of reference for the movements of the soldiers in the unit, enabling them to keep formation. The flag was also a symbol of the unit. The loss of a unit's flag was not only shameful, but losing this central point of reference could make the unit break up. To protect the flag, a detachment of soldiers was assigned to guard it

The color guard is formed and marched in one rank at close interval (shoulder-to-shoulder). Since the National Colors must always be in the position of honor on the right,[3] the color guard must execute a special movement to reverse direction. It does not execute rear march, nor does it execute about face. Rather, it performs a maneuver derived from the standard countercolumn command, generally known as counter march or colors reverse march, in order to keep the precedence of flags in order.
Other drill movements performed by the color guard include presenting arms, left and right wheel marches, eyes right (upon passing the reviewing stand during a parade), casing/uncasing the colors, and fixing/unfixing bayonets (by the arms bearers).

So she'll have a rifle and a bayonette? :confused3 I'm not sure I'd trust students to have weapons! :eek:

I think she wants to spin the flag, but Amanda did both, so maybe she'll want a rifle too?? Yikes, better not piss her off! :lmao:

Congrats to Abby! :banana: How exciting!
I didn't realize she was going to be living with her dad for high school. :guilty: Boo! No wonder you aren't super thrilled that middle school is ending.

Speaking of middle school ending...
There is a girl at DS's school who is repeating 8th grade because all of her friends are 7th graders. :scared1: She is a straight "A" student in all advanced courses. If DS told me he wanted to waste a year repeating 8th grade I would strangle him. I can't believe the district is even allowing her to do it. It is one thing to FAIL 8th grade, but to voluntarily repeat for social reasons? That's something you do in Kindergarten, not right before high school! I can not imagine what she expects to gain by staying in middle school. :sad2:

Maybe that's a bit of bragging about being stuck behind. Kari wanted to do that her senior year of HS, but all her teachers knew she was smart, and didn't fail her.

I love the colorguard. I got to do it once in Middle school and again in 9th grade. Saber was more natural to me, although all freshman had to use the flag during marching season. Then winterguard we got split from A guard (almost every one that was there for a year went into A) and B guard (mostly all the freshman, with like 3 second year girls). So I got to move over to saber line in B guard. I always thought if I stayed in that school and in the colorguard, I would've passed high school more easily.

How did I miss this??? I feel like a shmuck!

Congratulations!! :cool1::cool1:

(I'd like to see this video!!)

Schmuck number two, front and center!

Congratulations to Abby!!! Hope she has a great time!

I'm sorry she has to live three hours away though. That's really too bad. :hug:
