Several restaurants we are planning to visit have Mahi Mahi on the menu. I know it's a type of fish, but is it more like a mild cod or stronger like tuna or salmon.

Not stupid at all, it’s a very mild tasting fish, it is very good and tasty, it blends real well to many different sauces and seasonings. Enjoy!!
Just found this on the web........

Mahi-mahi is a versatile fish, with firm, white meat and a delicate flavor. Broiled, poached, baked, sautéed, grilled, or pan-fried, mahi-mahi delivers a truly outstanding taste. Mahi-mahi is great any way you choose to prepare it.

Try it you WILL like it....................

For some reason, I've always been under the impression that Mahi-Mahi was some sort of shark.

DH says it's more like a dense Talapia, which I love. So I'll be trying it this trip. With DxDP we're trying to eat lighter less filling dishes.

Does anyone know about Halibut? Is it real fishy tasting?

halibut=fishy. Not quite as bad as catfish, but too fishy for someone who doesn't care for fish all that much.

I dislike fishy-tasting fish...love cod, tilapia, and mahi mahi as well as shellfish like crab & lobster.

Thanks Catne, I was planning on ordering the Maize-crusted Halibut at Jiko's, but think I'll skip it. Catfish is last on my list of fish I'm willing to eat.

I agree, mahi mahi is most similar to tilapia, it's very mild. Halibut is a little fishier, more like hake. Cod and catfish are very fishy and I don't love them.

When I was little, mahi mahi was called dolphinfish for reasons I can't fathom (it has nothing whatsoever to do with dolphins) but then people started getting squicked out by the name so they started calling it by the native Hawaiian name (mahi mahi).

Random piece of Disney Trivia...

I always wondered why the Dolphin resort was called the dolphin when there's a giant fish on the top, so I asked a Cast Member...turns out, that it's a Mahi Mahi aka "dolphin fish." That's how the hotel got it's name.

According to what I've read, The fish got their name because of how they jump through the water when trying to catch their food. They can apparently be mistaken for a dolphin at first glance.

As for how they taste...it is very mild. Very close to Tilapia and it's typically used in Fish Tacos. If you've ever eaten one, chances are you've already eaten Mahi Mahi. :thumbsup2
