Can characters talk WITH YOU in Disneyland Kinect game?

Do the characters actually have a limited conversation with you in this game? If so, how do you get them to hear you? We have the game and every time we walk up to a character, they start a conversation and ask us a question then wait for a response. We try to talk back to them but they never hear us..Then they will say, "Oh you're a little shy?" or something similar. We even called the x-box support line tonight and they didn't have an answer for us.

Did you wave (or say "hi there") to them to start the interaction?

The characters only respond to certain verbal cues: hello, goodbye, dance, hug, etc.

Im not aware of actually talking to the characters. You can give commands like "high five", "Take a photo", "hug", "Autograph" but as far as actually having a back and forth conversation I havent seen or heard of that before.

No, you don't talk to the characters. As a PP said, you can say limited things like "High Five," but all the interactions during your quests are one-sided. They tell you to go get something and after you bring it back, there is a short, on-sided conversation. When they're done you can bow, hug, high-five, or wave good by. The game takes those cues and the character responds verbally. If you wait to long to take any action, the character will say to you something like "You're a little shy aren't you?" That doesn't mean you were to say something, it just means the game is waiting for you to take one of the available actions.
