Can anyone tell me what a normal rental for a mini van would be?

I'm looking for a 5 or 6 day rental in January. I know its super early so the prices are probably crazy (600 for a mini van!). I have only rented a car once and it was about 5 years ago but it was less than $100 for a full size.

We would need something that could fit 2 car seats and 4 adults. So a mini van might be our only option.

Can anyone let me know what to expect?
thanks in advance

Well it's hard to say because rates fluctuate wildly all the time. If you are going over the holiday period I would suspect higher than average.
All I can tell you is by watching and watching I got mine for 10 days in May for 200 from Alamo.
Right now I am looking for 10 days again in the end of August. I can't get it lower than 550 anywhere, but rates should start to drop soon.

Check out Budget using BCD x474200 (travelocity code). For 6 days in Jan 2013 total inc taxes is $299.14. You can add a coupon later since they all expire prior to Jan 2013 to get another $30 off that when you return the minivan.

We rent often (a mini van at MCO) and I always try to get it for around $200. This past spring break I couldn't get it under $300 and I was really disappointed, but it was Good Friday- the following Thursday.

You're probably right that this far out the prices will be crazy. But, its not too early to start looking. What I would do is find something and reserve it. However, under no circumstances should you do anything binding (pre-paid). When you reserve, all the agency will want is your name and email...there's no credit card hold or anything like that.

The other thing you can do is start gathering discount codes. If you're a member of Costco/BJ's, AAA, Entertainment, etc., there are usually discount codes to be had. You should plug in rental choices both with and without the codes. Sometimes no codes works better.

Of course, this far out, you probably won't see too much to get excited about. The other gotcha is that rental codes, with the exception of Entertainment, tend to run out at the end of December. Since you're looking at January, you may have trouble finding codes that will work.

The key to car rentals is to constantly keep checking. Keep something booked, but don't stop there. As you get closer to the date, you'll find that rates start going crazy. Sometimes they'll jump way down, sometimes up. I sometimes go in March and find that I get the best rate somewhere around 2-3 weeks out. I've even seen where the rates drop a day or two before, but never count on that.

The good news for you is that January (maybe with the exception of Jan 1 and MLK weekends) should be pretty quiet and I think you'll find some good rates on a minivan. At the very least, I would think you'll find a deal < $300 and you may do better than that...
