I don't think I've heard of this illness

I know about this. My Dad has it.

It's a inner ear thing that can cause you to have vertigo and possibly loss of hearing eventually. There isn't much in the way of research on it but they think it can be passed genetically. Which I believe now because my DSis had problems with vertigo start a few years ago and recently I have started having episodes.
It's like spinning around really fast (like when you are a kid) and then stop. Everything around you seems to be spinning. Only when you close your eyes the spinning doesn't stop. There isn't anything they can do for the vertigo but if you have a problem with nausea you can take some pills.
I have no idea what causes the episodes but for me they haven't lasted very long.

I found some great info on this disease at webmd.com.

Menieres is a diesease of the inner ear rom what I am reading. Information is hard to come by but Im getting some message boards that Im looking in to.

My mom is really sick and Im scared to death to be honest with you. :(

They think maybe this is what she has. She 64 and not in the greatest of health anyway ( heart issues but under control) she has been getting really dizzy and feeling our of control for awhile now. Today she was so ill she had to be rushed to the doc and was really sick there.
Theyre sending her for an MRI next week to see if they can figure out whats wrong.
Menieres is not something you die from but from what Im what reading you wish you did.

Like constant sea sickness times 100.

I hope they can make a quick diagnosis so she can hopefully get some relief. I'm so sorry that she's sick.

Here's some """""""***** pixie dust *****"""""""""" your way to help things along.

There's great support on these boards.

binny.......don't worry yourself too much. My DH has Meniere's Disease and lives a very normal (?), healthy, life. Before it was discovered that he had it, he would suffer from horrible spells of dizziness and nausea. During his spells, he couldn't move from bed. But now that they know what it is and he's on medication, he's as right as rain.

The cause is a build up of fluids in the middle ear which triggers the vertigo, which of course then triggers the waves of nausea. Strong antihistamines dries the fluids and relieves the pressure against the inner ear.

There is some hearing loss associated with the disease, but with my DH hearing loss was bound to happen anyway. He's been playing in rock bands for years.

Hope this helps,
Linda

Thank you all.

My concern is this combined with her other issues. I cant go into all of it but she cant take a lot of other medication and shes really struggling with the vertigo right now.

Thanks for the info everyone and Linda thats wonderful that youre dh is doing so well with it! :) Its nice to hear the positive side of it, I was reading several message boards where people were borderline suicidal from the symptoms. SO I had nothing else to go by. :) Thanks again.

I am an audiologist and I work for an ENT so I have seen a lot of patient's with Meniere's or other problems with vertigo. There are many causes of vertigo. Meniere's disease is more of a chronic problem. Pts with Meniere's usually have episodes of dizziness off and on for many years. It can be controlled with diet and medication if it is truly Meniere's. I find that Meniere's seems to be overdiagnosed by some ENT's but especially primary care doctors. I would be kind of surprised if your mom truly did have this disease if this is her first episode of vertigo. If she has had trouble with vertigo on and off for a while and this is just a particularly bad episode it may be but if this is an isolated incidence for her it seems kind of unlikely.

Many of the causes of vertigo are pretty benign and will go away with time as the body adapts. It can be very scary and it often seems like you go through a lot of testing to get no real answers. With vertigo doctors usually order a lot of testing that usually comes back normal to rule out certain causes of vertigo. I would recommend that she see an ENT. He may order some testing called and ENG or ECHOG. These tests are probably the best way to determine if a patient truly has Meniere's. Some ENT's specialize in balance disorders and vertigo. If you have any questions PM me.

:(
I hope she gets some answers and help soon... that sounds scary..... can't some meds cause that sort of problem too as a side effect? Best wishes for her recovery soon!
