We planned our vacation to Disney long before they announced about the 50th celebration stuff. The other day I called to make a reservation for the Fantasmic dinner package at MGM on the 5th,because that is the day we will be spending at MGM. Anyways all the places that you can eat for the dinner package say closed for a special event. Now I know the 5th is the day that the kick off is suppose to start, however the CM I spoke to gave me no information, they said they didn't know what was going on,if they aren't having Fantasmic that night that is one thing but are the parks all going to be open that day and operating as normal,as in the characters will be out and all, because I know there are certain characters that you can only see at MGM and no other park and we would be very sad to miss all of that. I am just curious to know if anyone knows what is going on.Thanks.

I don't the specifics but we were down in WDW the 1st week of May 2003 and both MGM and MK closed almost every night for special events. At MK it was because of grad nights and MGM because of private parties. One night Epcot was the only park opened and boy was it crowded.

I can handle it if the parks close early at night but I really want them to be open during the day and have the regular characters out, such as the Toy Story gang, the Incredibles,Jo Jo's circus.Have any of you ever heard of the parks closing for a whole day?? Just curious. I mean we planned our vacation long before they announced this knowing that usually the first week in May is a good time, weather wise and crowd wise. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You.

I'm not sure why you can't make ressies for the Fantasmic dinner, but MGM should be open that day since it's the first day of their 50th celebration and the debut of the new show there "Lights, Motors, Action!" (which looks really cool, btw - we saw them practicing for it on our last trip). Here's a link to the Dis's info page about the celebration. Not a lot of info but thought you may be interested: http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/HappiestCelebration.htm#hm-happy-celebration

I know on the annual passholders site there was a sweepstake for the press event at MGM for the opening of Lights, Motion, Action. However I thought it was May 4th. We are also going during this time and most of the new events taken from the other parks (California, Tokyo, Paris) are scheduled to officially open although we know Soarin will be open in April for the sneak peaks and soft opening.
My guess is press related activities.

I read, I believe on another post on this webiste-- that the press events were scheduled the evenings of the 4th and 5th but they would be over after the 5th. I too, am curious as to what will be closing early. It was my understanding that MGM was closing early on the 4th and that MK was closing early on the 5th-- but I just gleaned that info from other posts I've read-- nothing official.

Not sure if this helps anyone, but we successfully made PS for breakfast at Crystal Palace on May 5th a.m. CM made no mention of any park closings that day... :confused3

I read on another planning webiste that Disney is having a contest for Annual Pass Holders called and its an essay contest and the people who win get special passes into the press events at MGM and get to see the first show of Lights Motor Action and a dinner from what the post stated it was May 4th and May 5th that this event was happening so that could be why they have restaurants closed.
