BF and I have an early dinner PS at Brown Derby for the Fantasmic package, and only want a light-ish lunch. Counter service should fit the bill, does anyone have a favorite?

If we do counter service in MGM we usually eat at Pizza Planet. It's not gourmet, but the pizza is decent and I like their big salads. It can be a little noisy in there though.

We liked Backlot Express (next to Star Tours). Just had burgers, hotdogs, fries and chicken strips, but we enjoyed them. :)

I´d also recommend the Backlot Express, everytime I go to MGM I grab a burger there!!! Great Burgers :drinking1

Another vote for Backlot Express! We eat there every trip. Also, another tip: avoid the ABC Commissary!

I have enjoyed the food at the ABC Commisary. They have a little more variety than the Backlot Express but both are pretty good.

I agree. That was the worst meal we had WDW.

all i can say is that ABC Commissary was absolutely the worst meal we had at WDW. this was 3 years ago, and we only tried the burger. all 4 of us thought it was terrible, we didn't even finish it, and we've never had a complaint about a burger anywhere else in WDW. maybe it was an off day, i don't know, but we'll never get it again.

I would not recommend any counter service at MGM. this is the only park that I will eat at counter service: I find that none of the counters has the correct combination of items for my extended family and we usually have to go to two if not three to get the "right" food for everyone. I prefer to go to SCI-Fi Theatre and just have an appetizer or two.
I concur with the Commissary being the worst meal at MGM.
:yo-yo: :yo-yo:

Several seating areas, so we have never felt crowded or aware we are with lots of people. Great Burgers !

Food at commissary was okay but felt like we were in a sea of people, and the noise in pizza planet was unnerving to us.

Thanks, everyone!

Going to a sit down place and spliting an ap or two sounds good, but only if we can walk in, I don't want to wait, and I don't want to make a PS since I don't know where in the park we'll be or when we'll be hungry.

So, I guess when we do get hungery, I'll look on the map and see where the closest sit down is, and if there is no wait, then we'll eat there. If so we'll head to Backlot, unless it's on the otherside of the park.

One place to avoid is Rosie's Cafe which is across the street from the fantasmic theatre, Beauty and the Beast etc. We ate there a couple of years ago and I bit into the most disgusting cheeseburger I have ever eaten. One bite and I lost my appetite (and this is coming from someone who rarely meets a burger she doesn't like). In July the kids got hungry when we were in that area so dh suggested we stop and get the kids some chicken nuggets and fries. I reminded him of the last experience we had there but I said "Ok but I'm just having a coke." Yet again he had to wait in line forever to get the food and when we got it it was cold. Plus you sit out in an open seating area and it gets very busy so we saw people get their trays and look for a table that looks like it is about to be finished and they hover over the table like, "Hurry up and leave." I hate that! MGM is lacking so in counter service that we normally take a break, take the ferry to the BC and eat at Beaches and Cream, and then take the ferry back to the park.

We usually stop at Pizza Planet and grab an outside table to avoid all the arcade noise.

ABC Commisary is also a place we won't be back at. The lines are terrible even in off season and the food was terrible.

I'm glad I read this post. We will avoid the ABC Commisary like the plague!

One more vote for Backlot Express - I really enjoyed the grilled turkey and cheese sandwich. It was similar to a panini, served hot, with great flavor. I had it with baby carrots on the side, but I'm looking forward to trying the new cranberry slaw someday! Plus, you can get just half-a-sandwich if you're not very hungry.

ooooooooooo, that suggestion to take the boat to YC (or was it BC, I'll have to go back and check) and eating there is a great idea! We are staying from open to close so that will be a nice break from the park!

The Back lot restuarant was pretty good. I had a really good turkey sandwich (very light) with fries, a chocalate bundt cake and a icee drink. It was pretty good. I took a picture.....

My husband is a vegetarian and he had a Veggie Sandwich that according to him was the best counter service meal he had. He said it taste like pizza in a bun. The dessert that looks like a cookie is actually a peach cobbler. It was really good.

Because I enjoy eating light at WDW (I usually go in August and I can't stand to eat heavy) I usually eat snacks. This is what I must eat.......

We ate at the ABC Commissary in October and we actually liked it. They have some different items besides burgers and fries. Our favorite dish was :

Feijoada - $5.29 (Brazilian entree of stewed beef, pork and black beans with steamed white rice)

Very yummy and filling (add a dash of Tabasco for extra heat!)
It was a descent size serving for the price.
